Anyone else own the PS3 and dont find much of a difference btween BluRay and DVDs?

Imagewise they aren that far apart from what I can tell, but yeah sound is different.

I have a Pioneer 43" plasma 1080i (no P when I bought it) so I thought I'd see a big image difference.

there are a number of possible issues that could cause that...depending on how u have your PS3 set up...in some cases, the PS3 might downscale the movie to 540p and then upscale it back to 1080i...

what's your configuration..and do u have the latest firmware?

DeMoN 06-14-2007 07:22 PM

hard to tell as im not in USA at the moment but I believe I had it set to 1080i

About the firmware, yeah I saw the movie with the 1rst release w/o updating it... it has gone thru 5 updates at least so ill re-check it when I have the chance.

I only saw that tallaheda nights or something the one that came free w/ps3

More bad news for HD DVD, Blockbuster, one of the largest US Rental Outlets chooses Blu-Ray over HD DVD for in store rentals. Online will still have both. Apparently content exclusives wins out over price according to Blockbuster execs:

Blockbuster VP Matthew Smith revealed to the AP that the decision to go with Blu-ray -- which will reportedly be announced tomorrow -- stemmed from an overwhelming customer preference for those titles in the test markets, accounting for over 70% of all HD discs rented.

Interestingly enough, it seems that content -- and not price -- was the deciding factor for consumers, with Blu-ray-only hits such as the Spiderman and Pirates of the Caribbean films apparently outmatching equivalent HD DVD exclusives.

While it's still a little too soon to declare Blu-ray the outright winner, this Blockbuster decision only contributes to the momentum that Sony's darling has had of late -- momentum that at this point, might be too difficult for the other guys to counter.

also u keep referring to the POTC/Matrix numbers...those were from the first week sales...what are they currently?

remember Casino Royale sold 28k it's first week as a day and date and both Pirates were only a couple thousand behind...

Actually Planet Earth and The Departed had sold well on both platforms. I think if I recalled reading that The Departed also surpassed 100k copies sold.

About disc problems for HD DVDs, it looks like Blu-Rays seems to have production problems as well:

Although it is only on a few titles, or maybe it is only only limited, but this isn't good for PR either.

Haha, I continue to defend because it is pushing Blu-Ray to go cheaper. I don't have to pick a side, my wallet will do the talking. :D

Technically I have already given in since I am committed to buying a PS3 as soon as they get Rumble back in and get some games out like MGS4 and GT5.

But I have no problem using the PS3 as my only game machine and another player for my HD disc, personally I preferred it that way.

Who cares if Blu-Ray drives are getting cheaper... they are still lacking in the number of movies on disc at the moment, and BD movies are freking $30. But I guess that's just inflation..

With that said, I'm still waiting for a cheap BD writer for my new desktop ;)

TopGearNL 06-18-2007 09:36 AM

Blu-ray drives just arrived over here :?

ae86_16v 06-19-2007 04:49 AM

^ Even if the drives are cheap, expect at least another year to year and a half before the blank media gets cheap enough for you to buy.

dutchmasterflex 06-19-2007 09:28 AM

Yeah that's true, although I was one of the kids who were buying 10-packs of CD-R's for 20 bucks back in the 6th grade ;)

Blockbuster's decision to support Blu-ray in all of its 1,450 stores is having a bigger impact than it seems. A tipster at an unnamed retailer tells us they've had more HD DVD player orders canceled over the last few days than they've seen over the entire life cycle. The kicker? All of them were canceled because of the Blockbuster announcement.

more good news for HDDVD...

Jabba 06-20-2007 08:58 AM

I detect sarcasm

dutchmasterflex 06-20-2007 09:10 AM

Keep in mind Blockbuster is a hair away from going bankrupt... Sony must have paid them big bucks to go BlueRay exclusively..

I have a feeling this will actually end up killing Blockbuster off for good.

So this might actually be good news for HD-DVD ;)
