Alrighty, here goes my bid for the system. All prices in pounds, but converted from American dollars so may be some rounding.

No SCSI because they only offer SCSI 320 drives for approximately £600--the slight performance increase as a scratch drive does not justify the added expense over regular IDE. Parhelia has the best image quality in the business and has three monitor output on-board (meaning no requirement for a dualhead card + pci card for the third screen). Refrigerated overclock is virtually faultless and offers ultimate perfomance for encoding (1800 CPU specmark vs. a mere 1200 for a 3.0 GHz HT P4 :twisted:). Firewire 800 available if you own the camera, but an extra £40 for a relatively unnoticeable speed hike over Firewire 400. In-case screen likely useless but very cool looking :lol:. Engraved logo is made of polished stone (quartz, granite, etc.) and can have up to two lines of text or your signature placed in it for a nominal fee--ultimate personalization! 6 channel professional audio for maximum quality. Composite video out for perfect output to tv or other device. Only thing missing is a capture card. I leave this to your discretion, but really many solutions under £50 are available with faultless video importing. Wireless keyboard and mouse to eliminate desk clutter for maximum pimpage :wink:. COST: £3,850 for system, £50 for video card Total thus far: £5,700 That would be your system right there. If I was pushing right up to the £7,000 limit, I might add: * 54 Mbit wireless ethernet for further elimination of cords (works well in my house--reaches ~25 Mbit real world speed at reasonable range) * LCD Projector (not my strong point, although the NEC models I've used have been excellent--if a bit pricey) * media PC--would require aforementioned wireless, but you could have a really sweet setup where you streamed video from your computer/office to your home theatre EDIT: Apparently someone else beat me to Liebermann Inc (l computers) :oops:. They do worldwide shipping apparently btw, but are based in America. Also, I didn't put this on but it's something to consider. They offer RAM drives for Windows, meaning like instantaneous startup (< 10 seconds). I've used a workstation thus equipped and it's kind of surreal--no startup, no harddrive scratch at all! The only problem is that it costs something like $5000USD, which seems a bit pricey for what is arguably a luxury on a home system. Good luck with the search :D. |

I have to admit it is a downside. Although I'm sure these guys are low volume sellers anyway, and so have customers all over the world. (They started out making workstations for digital animation if I recall correctly.)
Is it the warranty issues that bother you or more just wanting a local dealer? If you want local you could always buy a Dell workstation. We use them in our CAD/CAM lab and they're awesome. Dual P4s, dual 18 inch LCDs, 300 gigs of storage, Parhelia, and Audigy comes to around 5200 pounds including VAT from dell.co.uk. Also an impeccable warranty since it's a professional system. I can come up with a more detailed round up if you're interested (?). (You could also just buy the workstation and then buy the cinema screen elsewhere; there's no reason it shouldn't work.) Edit: Just checked out SDK's system and it's pretty nice, although I've never heard of that monitor manufacturer (maybe European brand?). I would stick with the main fabs when it comes to LCDs. If someone has a good British like mum and pop store where I can configure a computer please post it--I have tons of ideas hardware wise!!! :D |

Jabba, got couple of questions... do you have air con in your room? Have a really good (but pricy) system in mind but heat maybe a bit of problem :)
IMO, wireless lan is probably not a good option for you since I can imagine interference being a problem in uk. Security is always an issue too.. so, gigabit network is probably a better choice wit 1000Mbps. The 54Mbps will probably end up being 2-3M/s in real life, it's way too slow when you have to transfer video files around. Someday, I have to upgrade my 100bt lan to gigabit, hate to miss a show cause you can't transfer few gigs of avi's to another box in time :mrgreen: Do you mind having less than 3 LCDs? Cause matrox parhelia isn't exactly the best choice for video editing. |

Anyway, pretty pimp and likely faster than all this single processor stuff (even the last system I specced) in raw data crunching--Dual Processor + HT = effectively 4 CPUs under WinXP :shock:. Harddrives are a bit limited on the IDE end of things, but if you wanna really pump up the speed you can get up to 4 SCSI 320 10,000 rpm drives @ 150 GB each. I threw on two 20 inch flatscreens for the desktop and then assume you'd add a projector for the third output (on the Parhelia). Only 1 gig of RAM since it's ECC (error checking) and kinda pricey. Non-ECC is available as well and in retrospect is probably the better choice. Integrated RAID is kinda sweet--an external RAID card with caching is available if you're into even more speed. www.dell.co.uk |
