I heard that Leno and Seinfield were in the running also for presenters. leno could be good but idk about Seinfield. also i read that corolla is actually a pretty big car fan, he went to le mans last year. so idk its still up in the air about this being a show thats worth watching. any word on a possible air date for the pilot. last i heard was march, but since its march now and there are still very little details i doubt it will be this month.

vexor 03-02-2008 07:10 PM

^^ yeah I also heard the rumor of mid march to air but i'm doubting it

RC45 03-02-2008 07:38 PM

At least, like JC, Leno is an actual likeable character. Carolla is not that likeable of a character and only appeals to a fringe audience.

He works as a "Man Show" host, but has little charisma about him, and I'd have a hard time being convinced that this guy is a "car guy" through and through.

This is why I feel in Jay Leno you have one of the greatest, if not THE greatest "Car Guy" on the planet.

He has the funds to meet and exceed any car dream 100 times over, yet is a real down to earth "Car Guy" that can appeal to Car Guys/Gals of every budget level - and this is not something that I have ever seen any other car show host pull off.

HeilSvenska 03-03-2008 11:36 AM

I listened to Adam Corolla's radio show for years. He's very funny, but not for this kind of stuff. He also has a very unfortunate last name. Jay Leno needs to be the main presenter if this sacrilege is to continue.

chedisme 03-03-2008 11:40 AM

yea i agree leno is most likey the way to go, but i have a feeling adam is going to be in there one way or another.

Well, then they have lost at least 1 viewer.. and I am sure the difference between Leno and not Leno will be millions and millions of viewers.

Leno has a fan base that any adveryising revenue exec would be an absolute imbecil to pass up.

In fact, if faced between Leno and "someone else" - choosing "someone else" should get him fired on the spot.

For a Car Show (which traditionaly have a very niche and fringe following) having someone like Leno whois the consumat ecar guy and adored by millions, this is a match made in heaven.

I have seen car shows come and go over the years, and almost always the failure was "lack of advertising revenues".

You will not have that problem if Leno hosted it.

Dendroica 03-08-2008 09:33 AM

Adam Corolla! Egads, what a miserable choice.

Perhaps they can get Chevy Chase? A much better idea would be Jamie Lincoln Kitman.

acmarttin 03-08-2008 09:50 PM

They may not have to decide though. They can talk to Leno all they want. The question is, after hosting The Tonight Show, would he want to invest all that time and energy into a new show? I'm almost afraid that Gear is 5 years too late for Leno...

I am sure he would enjoy doing it though...

But why bother with some cloned Top Gear?

Supercars Exposed on Speed is pretty good as it is.

Lets give these guys a proper budget and see what can happen.

79TA 03-09-2008 03:54 AM

Eh, I wasn't too impressed with speed's new supercar show. It just seemed so blah.

Its getting better - they are learning with each episode.

chedisme 03-14-2008 12:05 AM

heres a link to an article about adam C being in Gear. it also mentions a auto writer named dan niel, and that he will be involved somehow.

chedisme 03-18-2008 11:47 PM

ok so Adam Corolla is definitely in. he said in his show that he was going to el toro air field to film some stuff. cross your fingers.

idk i just cant see him pulling huge power slides yelling POWER!!

HeilSvenska 03-18-2008 11:50 PM

Adam Corolla's funny, but not "haha" funny. I'll give them an episode's worth of chance, no more.

vexor 03-29-2008 10:05 PM

That's logic right there.
A half-baked Top Gear will just generate mass rolling of eyes, boredom, and those responsible will appear pathetic. They attempted it here in Australia, and I was embarrassed to watch more than a few minutes. :-( It lasted only a couple episodes.

Give a decent, original, American show the proper budget and let it take its own course.

chedisme 03-30-2008 12:26 AM

so i read and article Leno wrote and he basically said he didn't want to give Jeramey any more reason to dislike the states. ie. by bastardizing his show.

Oh?
Is this because you've gone on drives with many of the sports car clubs out there on a winding country road at "driving miss daisy" pace?

Or is it just rare that there are guys with Corvettes, Ford GT's, Viper's, Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, Mustangs, Camaro's, Murkers, Sierra Cosworth's, Golf GTi's, R32's, S4's, RS4's, RS6's, R8's, M3's, M5's......... etc. etc. etc. etc. .... that they appreciate corners?

Really?

That must be why Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche sell more cars in the USA than all their other world markets combined.

Welcome to the forum

dutchmasterflex 04-01-2008 01:22 PM

Leno's smart and definitely puts things into perspective. Glad he knows he is and will never be as entertaining as Clarkson. Not to mention American TV is all about advertising, sponsors would never allow for any criticism...

Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche sell more because, Americans buy more of everything.. until the recession sets in within the next 2 years..

Clarkson is not funny - he is sarcastic... his humour is borderline funny at times, but mostly just sarcastic.

Leno is a far more entertaining car guy then Clarkson could ever hope to be - witness Leno's Garage cult folloing with barely any promotion.

The people buying the Ferrari, Lambo and Porsche's are not those going to be affected by the almost non-event recession.

dutchmasterflex 04-01-2008 04:21 PM

Leno isn't funny, even with high paid writers. I definitely do not find him entertaining, although his collection of cars is entertaining enough by them selves.

This is all personal opinion of course though..

About the recession, of course all the wealthy people will not be affected, but the majority of the population will, and then the rest of the world will when they have no one to sell too.

The only thing missing in this unoriginal and untrue post is the left turn NASCAR jab.

Anyway, Leno and Clarkson are both funny to me but in different ways. Leno is a smart fellow and has quite a few reservations as he should. This Jalopnik post was interesting.

a majority of the nation wasn't affected by the crash of 1929....

abdulscarface 04-08-2008 05:56 PM

I wouldn't watch it. Sticking to the real thing. I'm afraid the corporation have to much say in what goes on Tv. Can you imagine them saying anything bad about let say Ford or GMC lame cars?? Ouch goodbye fund or see ya Mr. Adam Corolla (that must be a joke right??). Hopefully they won't follow the same model as the original Top Gear. Hopefully about good ol' American Muscle Cars now that's something else.

chedisme 04-08-2008 08:25 PM

I understand it will probably be a bad show, but its going to be about cars, so I would definitely watch it. I dont get speed so I am starved of car shows. so it gets me by default.

Fingers crossed

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/us-...-nbc-contract/

Apparently Dan Neil was a candidate but now his contract with NBC has expired and judging by this article, Tanner Faust is another one of the hosts

Anyone know who these 2 guys are?

neoned 04-20-2008 02:02 PM

I've seen some of AC's old datsun stuff. One is a repli-racer of pete brocks car. He is a hardcore car guy.

Tanner Faust is a Drifter and currently hosts a show on Speed called Supercars, which is sort of a lazy, low budget, poorly edited look at Exotics. Dan Neil is just a journalist. He has worked with Car & Driver and whatnot. Tanner is a competent driver.

No US Top Gear... for now.
Quote:

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.

...

Several notable pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen. These include a US version of the hit British car series "Top Gear", the Barry Sonnenfeld-produced legal drama "Play or Be Played", the Conan O'Brien produced comedy "Man of Your Dreams", and the Brett Ratner-produced cop drama "Blue Blood".

There's a rumor that TG won't start at the date that was given to us. :-(

Oh, and there might be a US Top Gear this year afterall. :?:

bluedemon 05-25-2008 06:13 PM

Meh I can't see an American version of Top Gear being any good without the original cast, if NBC does decide to go ahead with it, it will probably only last a year, top gear fans are just to into the BBC's version of it.
