e36 m3 good?
I'm contemplating getting a 95-99 m3 or a 99-04 jeep grand cherokee limited v6 or v8 to go off to college. I would really like the m3 because i know they are stellar cars for the time period plus my dad had a 89 m3 but it's almost ten years old and I need something to be reliable and last me a good 6-7 years. I don't know much about cherokee's but I know it's american made and that kinda scares me and it's auto which i can't stand but it's nice and comfortable and has space the m3 doesn't. Any suggestions?

I had a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, it was indestructable. I thrashed that thing and it would never fail on me. Gas Mileage is terrible, but that thing wouldnt die. I off roaded it, power slid it, and just beat on it. It was just a great vehicle. I have two buddies with M3s, but i suggest if your going to college, unless you have enough money to pay for random break downs, i wouldnt suggest it. Its a great fucking car, but repairs are expensive.

yeah expect the jeep to break down from time to time, but with affordable repairs... but epect random shit to go wrong with the m3 that will always be 1000 or more to repair. at least thats how it was with the 3 friends with the e36m3 and the 1 with an e30 m3.

You are comparing a BMW to a Jeep in terms of repair bills? That is not really comparing apples to apples. Of course the BMWs repair bills and parts will cost more. If you really want cheap repair bills then you should probably get a Civic. ;) .

I would usually say "no contest, get the M3".... But an 18 year old in an M3 is a recipe for disaster...

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . http://img328.exs.cx/img328/4237/m3cult6ov.gif But as was said before, I suggest maybe something with less power for beginning. |
I learned to drive on my dad's e30 m3 and my first car was a 00 s4 turbo and i'm still here.
|
You think e36 is better than e30? I dont know, never drove them myself but as I heard e30 is slightly better :)

If daddy/mommy/Mastercard are going to be shovelling money your way, why not go for broke and party on with an E55 Wagon.. :P The guy seemed to be approaching this from a budget limited angle. |

the jeep will come in very handy because of all the moving you will be doing with in the next 4 years..
but if i were you i'd restore your dad's E30 M3 and then swap in a E36 M3 engine.. |
BTW, any pics of you fathers M3?

A 4door M3 is hardly a $10K practical purchase now - is it. ;) (for the record I understand they are still $15K cars) |
^ Yeah, exactly. I don't think you could find a 10k M3. A 95 version which is only available in Coupe is still around 12k. 10k ones are usually pretty high miles or are pretty beat up.
Clean ones are around 18 to 20k. Average is around 15k for average miles. I direct you to this thread that covers a lot of reliability issues with the E36 Series. http://www.motorworld.net/forum/show...=30878&start=0 |
seems you want to spend a lot in your college car, either in repairs or in gas.
IMO you should get a cheap car, with cheap parts, cheap insurance, cheap service, but reliable (and your xmas gift??? :P ) the car will end trashed and abused, if not crashed (I still don't know a high school-college student who hasn't or didn't crashed in their cars) the jeep is a good choice if you'll have to move lots of things or friends, but surely you'll travel alone go for an accord *puts flame-proof suit* |
well i don't really want to get a cheap piece of shit just because it is cheap, especially since I'M buying it with my OWN money i want it to be something i atleast like looking at and won't dred claiming it as my own. I can only spend about 15k and i can find alot of later model cherokee's for that much and the m3's i find in that price range are almost 8-10 years old and i'm gonna need it to last me about 6 years or so cuz i'm gonna be too broke to just get a new car right after school. I'm really not an SUV person and never have been but i'm on 12 months probation on my license and really can't afford to lose it anytime soon so i figured a cherokee cuz it's bigger than a car, slower, automatic so it will help me calm down. On the other end though i came across a 01 s4 with a few mods, absolutely clean and so gorgeous and even though i had an 00 i fell in love with it. And my family is pretty much an audi family now, i mean my lil brother drives a 97 a4, my dad drives a 03 s4, and my mom drives a toureg which is pretty much an audi. Sorry i don't have any pix of my dad's e36, he sold it a few years back, i can try to find the ebay and autotrader pix he had tho.

i have 2 opinions here. both depend on the situation. all i can say is that if mom and dad aren't gong to support you financially in school, take the jeep. Other than that. my position should be well known  |
Actually with $15K to spend, get a new $10K car.
You get warranty and reliability. Sure it will be a cheap ass KIA.... but you will also have $5,000 left in the bank for beer, chicks and partying :P |
chix don't care if you don't have a ride
