Intel Core 2 Duo - my results - UPDATED 10/08/2006

So today I got my first conroe :D, I say first because I have a retail e6700 on order but that could be a while getting here, and in a moment of madness I bought an OEM e6300 to test while I wait :P

e6300 'allendale' are the baby version of conroe cpu, and as such only have 2mb cache compared to the 4mb cache of the faster versions

Test Setup
e6300 core 2 duo (1.86ghz default)
asus p5w dh deluxe motherboard
2x 1gb gskill 6400 'hz' series
radeon x1900xt
2x 150gb WD raptors in raid 0
1x 250gb WD sata2 drive
FSP 700W PSU

all cooled by swiftech apex ultra watercooling kit with MCW55 VGA waterblock added to system, and 1 120mm fan in the front of the case

Results
I managed to get 2.8ghz ( 7 x 400fsb) with very low volts, but sadly it seems the motherboard is pretty shit and no matter what I can not get stable above 400fsb even though the cpu has more to give

superpi 32m Comparison
to finish off 2x 32m superpi run at the same time, and compared with same test run on AMD Opteron170 also at 2.8ghz(pretty much the same as X2 series but 2 x 1mb cache)

3d mark 01
run with small overclock on the radeon to match x1900xtx speeds

3d mark 06
with the conroe again using x1900xt @ xtx speeds

and with AMD Opteron170 @ 2.8ghz but different gfx card, just to compare the cpu score

video editing
I tested with 640x480 avi file, and had 100fps average recompressing it using divx6.1 on default settings!

Impressions
all hail the king! conroe rocks my box and I cant wait to get that e6700 and hopefully get a nice 4ghz or close to. For those on a budget e6300 is a killer choice - it thrashes any system I had previously quite easily ;)

I don't know what any of that means...except that a 41072 on the 3D Mark is pretty fucking good compared to what my computer does! 8)

Congrats on the new set-up...can't wait to see what the full power version can do! :D

Aye... I wish I have a conroe. My X2 seems like crap now :(. It can barely keep up with the cheapest conroe despite it being overclocked by 40%.

BTW, what's the point of running 3dmark 2001?

its more based on core processing i believe.... something like that and not certain rounded numbers that the revisions of 3dmark have become

Congrats Karman, I am glad you like it but I have to say that everything you said is chinese for me

Call me a noob or whatever, but wtf does all that mean and where is the best place to go to learn it?

3d 2001 is very cpu/ram limited, much more so than the newer versions which are more gfx bound, so its a good test for showing cpu power ;)

The cheapest one being £114 here...hows that for being good bang for ya buck.

But why not 2006's cpu test? I think that should do a better job than say 2001, but I wouldn't know what render graphics with just a cpu actually means in real life testing.

can't you raise the multi? (to like 8?) and i guess asus was never the best to go with for OCing.. (but it seems there is a little shortage on conroe boards.. me, i'll be waiting for the 590-sli intel to come out first 8) )

well I like 2001 as it tests whole system at the same time, and is nice to see the progress from earlier systems I had ;)
anyway I added 3d06 result and one I did with amd opteron earlier in the year as a comparison

cpu multiplier is locked.. btw asus have made some of the best intel boards for overclocking - I guess this is the curse of the early adopter striking. Whats funny is its rock solid @ 400fsb but anything above that crashes very quickly no matter what, so I'm pretty sure its a bios bug

Pimp Racer 07-31-2006 10:31 AM

Damn you, I am feeling very jealous rite now.
So what kinda mobo you planning to use for the 6700 since you said the one for the 6300 wasnt all that good.

Erez 07-31-2006 11:10 AM

dont get me wrong i'm a huge asus fan, and the great thing is the bios updates ;) :good:

well like every other manufacturer they've made some lemons too, but their recent history of intel boards has been very good...

also I think this board will be fine for e6700, 400fsb = 4ghz which would be a nice 24/7 speed if the cpu is good enough, and I'm not planning on changing motherboard for a while, as there isn't enough info on what is the best board for conroe yet
