84% of Camaro pre-orders so far are for the SS V8's
 

This has been floating around the internet, but I haven't been able to pin down a definite source. The rumor is that it's a letter from GM. Anyway, the Camaro will undoubtedly sell more in its V6 form as the pony car split is usually about 2 V6 cars for every car with a V8. Then consider how capable the new V6 Camaro is and it will surely be a winner. Nevertheless, GM didn't predict how dominant the more hardcore Camaro enthusiast response would be in the pre-orders. A full 84% of buyers opted for an SS model. Enough of my rambling, here's the small stat sheet.

What I find disturbing is how few people have chosen the 1SS trim. I'd be all for a minimalist V8 pony car, especially given that the 5th gen isn't really light (it comes with side curtain air bags and lots of other standard features that are nice, but heavy) to begin with. If I were to buy one, I'd have to see how much weight I could get out of the car.

Sounds about right. Initial preorder customers are usually the ones who pay the most for cars. Give it some time and I'm sure some people (though I can't still imagine any) will opt for V6, even though that's still not light at all.

So far, the pre-order folks seem more interested in checking all of the boxes to get a "fully loaded premium car" instead focusing on performance. I'm a bit let down by my GM bretheren. Fully loaded Camaros have their place of course, but I was hoping to see more performance oriented street fighters on order.

ehh, looking at the options list, I guess 2SS doesn't really add much weight. The speaker system is the only big offender here (I'd still skip it though)

Where the hell do you come up with these numbers? The fbodies are not the mustangs.
The 4th gen fbodies sold 60 percent V8. Not to mention the word directly from the camaro brand manager last year at the release of the car was that they expected to sell 80 percent v8 when first released working down to 60 percent as typical. They were planned for the v8 part.

2002 gm build specs

24,805 Camaros were Z28 or SS (had LS1 Engine) which is 59.4% of build.

2001 gm build specs
12,652 Camaros were Z28 or SS (had LS1 Engine) which is 43.6% of build.

2000 gm build specs

20,406 Camaros were Z28 or SS (had LS1 Engine) which is 44.9% of build.

I don't know where this site gets its numbers from, but it does seem like the V6 fourth gen coupe outsells V8 by a lot though.

I'd have a snarling monstruous V8, first thing I am doing to it is putting on a flowmaster to make it sound even more bad ass

I don't think you understand how to read those numbers. The Z28, B4C, and SS were all V8s.
