i was wondering what bike hand the largest displacement for a single cyclinder bike? I know the Buell Blast is at 500cc for a single but are there bigger?

And the Suzuki DR Big.. also 650 if I remember correctly...

TransAm 04-10-2006 11:18 AM

^ DR Big was 750 or 800cc single cylinder depending on year

Engine type: Water-cooled 779 cc single cylinder 4-stroke. OHC, SACS, 4 valves. Dual carb. 54 hp (40 kW)/ 6.600 rpm, 62 Nm (6,32 kg-m)/ 5.400 rpm. 5-speed.

what about currently in showrooms?

TransAm 04-10-2006 12:00 PM

Suzuki DR650, Honda XL650/XR650 or the Buell, I guess

KTM and Husqvarna probably make some big single cyl bikes as well, check their websites.

How could I forget.. :P - but I coulda sworn our DR Big wasn't that big a all.. maybe South Africa only got a 650 and they put DR Big stickers on it.. cause it was a kickstarted monster.

I remember watching a buddy determined to try kick start his Doctor - even though the thumb-lever compression reducing thingy was not working and almost broke his pelvis as the bike did it's level best to try drive his thigh-bone through his hip joint.. hehe :P

I don't rememebr if he ever walked without a limp again... ;) hehe

Ouch!

no electric start + big single cyls = not a good thing

aprillia apegaso 650 strada has largest displacement for a single cyclinder bike in Turkey . It has 659 cc and 50hp. BMW F650 series come second with 652 cc and 50hp.

cool thanks a lot guys, would that DR650 but to much for a starter?

TransAm 04-10-2006 03:41 PM

Not all at, I had one last year and its an easy bike to ride if you are taller than 5'9". If you are much shorter the seat / ride height can be lowered by a dealer.

Can handle dirt tracks as well as being a nice street bike. I chose it over the Honda and Kawsaki on aesthetics; it was the nicest looking of the 3 IMO.

cool i am 5'10 and 170lbs so what would be the biggest bike that i could start on and not be overwhelmed? I was looking into single cyclinders for the lack of TQ so i would get into to much trouble ;)

TransAm 04-10-2006 07:32 PM

I'll just go and bang my head on a wall for a moment!

(Singles are known for their torque  but you'll befine on the DR or any other dual purpose bike as you are also only getting 45hp from a 650 single)

There is a thread about good starter bikes in this section already, check that out

TNT 04-10-2006 08:25 PM

lol sorry i am not really the best on motorcycle engines, but i was mainly wondering what size bike wieght/power would be the limit for my size. not a starter bike thread

TransAm 04-11-2006 10:59 AM

There is no limit as such, you need to buy something suitable for your needs, and more importantly, suited to your road experience on 2 wheels
