Drove a 996 Carrera 2 today...
 

...and it's fun of a different flavour.

Cons:
Sit up and beg driving position, felt a little awkward.

Short 1st gear has one in 2nd before you know it - and if you slow and select 1st in anticipation of a stop, but try keep rolling, engine braking and the short gear can have your passanger (in this case the owner ;)) picking his teeth form the dash board. hehe

Stock gear shifter - a little sloppyish, begs for a nice stiff short shifter change.

Feels a little quicker than it is because of the off-beat sound and shorter gearing.

Pros:
The sound :)

Short 1st gear has you in second before you know it ;)

Feels quicker that it is so you end up going faster than you meant to :twisted:

All in all a nice package - a nice car - but I did not get the "it's an awe inspiring German interior" feeling everyone seems to think you get.

It is not better than my Z06 from a presentation point or quality feeling or funcitonal persepective.

In fact, the owner eluded to the special technique Porsche use when designing the interior ergonomics of the 911 series - "Take all the bits you think you need, and load them into a blunderbuss and shoot them back at the dash board".. :)

The car has wider/bigger Turbo wheels and tyres - and felt pretty good and "chuckable" as we like to say in the colonies.

He gets to drive the leaf-spring bathtub next time - I will let you know what his impression is.

Now RC might be thinking if he buys one for his upcoming midlife crisis :wink:
Can you give the 996 a grade? 10 as "I would buy if I had the money" to 0

Well, this a colleague at work and we are becoming driving buddies so there will be plenty of opportunity for pictures when we head out into the woods.

As far as rating the car, there is no doubt it is slower than the Z, but it's a different feel. Would I buy one - sure, why not - but I would feel a bit odd everytime a Z06 blew me into the weeds.. ;)

Would I swap the Z06 for one - no. The car is a little too refined for my uncivilized taste.

Now I may have a different view of a GT3.

Well its only a Carrera......................was it a TT or a GT3/GT2...............Never liked carreras..........just slow :|

I think we all could use a GT3. Id like mine Black on Black. They are just stunning cars. The sound the GT3 makes to makes eveyrhting around it wet.

Are you so sure that the quality/presentation was the same as the Vette. I've been near a vette, and in a few 996s, and it's the Porsche that seems better. I think the cabin of the Porsche is incredibly dull, however :|

:shock: wel - uhm---you see it's sorta like....

The interior did not jump out as the "greatest thing since sliced bread and observe and see why the Corvette interior is inferior" at all.

With all the press about how bad the Corvette (for example) is versus many other cars (the Porker included) you would expect this difference to be over whelming and obvious - it just isn't. If it's better it is an incremental or marginal difference really.

The door handles, power accessories buttons, steering wheel, shifter, control staks etc were not so vastly better or different that you would notice -------- UNLESS you have been indoctrinated to VIEW the Corvette (as an example) as bad.

It was just a black leather trimmed cabin that was not as roomy as the Corevtees is about it - with a slight air of luxury that is not THAT much off from the Vette.

Now, if you were to compare me mums 1971 Mini to the 996 - then yes, the difference in uality and feel are extreme... :P ;)

i rode in a 911 C2 today and i was impressed by the sound and the ride. He took a highway 180 degree onramp at like 70 it was just pulling and pulling. Interior wasnt bad but you know its just like a german vette interior. You know they can do better but it gets the job done.

So we now have two guys having had a ride in a 911 and neither of you has pictures?
