Bugatti Veyron 0-100-0 time (finally)

Quote:

The Bugatti Veyron has wiped the floor with the opposition in Autocar’s annual 0-100-0mph contest, featured in the current issue of the magazine, even managing to beat a Suzuki GSX-R1000 superbike!

Featuring 25 of the world’s fastest cars, from the 14th placed £79,995 Aston Martin V8 Vantage to the second-placed £34,995 Ariel Atom, the shoot-out pitches the cars against each other in a straight fight to see which is the fastest to 100mph. There’s more to it than just outright speed though – slowing from 100mph to a dead halt is just as important.

The Veyron, with its 987bhp 16-cylinder engine, wasn’t necessarily the favourite to win. "A low weight tends to be the key to a good 0-100-0mph car," said Autocar’s road test editor Adam Towler. "Cars like the Ariel Atom and Caterham Superlight historically dominate this contest."

But the 1890kg £880,000 Bugatti ripped through the gears to hit 60mph in 2.8sec and 100mph in an astonishing 5.5sec. It then stopped in just 3.4sec, giving a 0-100-0mph time of 9.9sec.

(It's worth pointing out that the overall world record is still held by the Ultima GTR, which can do the same sprint in 9.4 seconds).

Not only is the Bugatti faster than the Suzuki, it creates more g-force at maximum acceleration than you’d experience in an F-16 jet fighter at take off or when skydiving.

But the lightweights still turned in an impressive performance, from the relatively unknown £32k Brooke Double R in fourth place to the £35k Ariel Atom 300 in second.

"Although the Veyron is undoubtedly the quickest road car ever, you can still have nearly as much fun for much less money," said Adam Towler. "It’s good to see British sports cars doing so well against such an impressive machine as the Bugatti."

Autocar also brought along an A1 GP car, driven by Brit Robbie Kerr, to see how a purpose-built race car would compare with road-going machinery. The 550bhp single seater weighs just 695kg, and proved to be the fastest vehicle on the day with a 0-100-0mph time of 8.4sec.

Pretty impressive since the Veyron weighs very nearly double what the Ultima GTR weighs (4,162 lbs vs. 2,310 lbs).

ohh pleaseeee someone :| :( scans

I bet the Ultima GTR guys are happy!

Still, very impressive time for such a heavy beast. The braking is maybe the most impressive, 3.4sec...if my physics aren't off, that's about 1.34 average G of braking over the 3.4sec, nice.

So did they only test the 0-100-0, or what?? How about some handling tests hahaha.

Well it was the "0-100-0mph contest", so I'm going to assume that's all that was tested :P

Yeah, yeah, but we all know how easy its been to get a hold of ANY kind of tests of the Veyron, so you'd think Autocar would have just went ahead and done a full test on the thing once they finally got a hold of one, even if it was only part of a 0-100-0 test thing...;) :P

Another stupid comment by a stupid magazine writer..

Uhm planes do not take off at a high rate of speed. (unless they want to put the Veyron up against a steam catapult launch on an aircraft carrier.. ;))

Once they leave the ground, jets scream into the sunset.

Everytime I see a magazine put a car against a plain rolling on the ground I just want to slap the editor in the face.

Next thing they will say x-car beats the Jumbo jet in 0-100-0... :P

LOL, that annoys me quite a bit as well! Its just so unrealistic to put cars against airplanes, its completely apples to oranges!

Just noticed something in the article 5.5 to 100 mph then 3.4 to 0 actually equals 8.9 secs.... either error when typed or they can't count.

hmmm...

good god

the same thing that people wrote in the Ultima thread...

there is a thing called creaction time, people...

its not like some instantaneous beep goes off, then the guy is immediately off throttle, and on brakes...

there is usually a spotter who says "100" or "brake" or something

the Veyron is both Better then anybody possibly expected, and worse then what they know :?

Possibly just a typo, since it would be exactly a 1 second difference. So it's either 0-100 in 6.5, or 100-0 in 4.4 :P

Or maybe there was just a 1 second period where the driver ensured they were at 100, then started braking *shrug*

1 second to react?

vexor 06-29-2006 12:39 AM

^^ probably added in total over the entire time of the test

nthfinity 06-29-2006 12:41 AM

i haven't ever conducted this test myself, but when you are accellerating that hard, you must know how crazy it is... 1 second is not a long time, and in just 5 seconds you are already going 100...

vexor 06-29-2006 12:43 AM

blows the mind away doesn't it?
