Redefining your concept of excessive HP- Carlisle 08

So this past weekend yours truly had the opportunity to check out Corvettes at Carlisle. I only went for a day but I ran into two cars everyone might find of interest. First is the new car from Mallet.

A new Solstice.. If you recall previously Mallet rammed an ls2 into a Solstice. Well apaprently it didn't stop there. Ladies and Gentleman I give you the turbocharged LS7 engine Solstice. 905 HP.

Not to be outdone, the Corvettes brought their own hp leader. According to the plaque "Worlds fastest street car" . 2400 HP. 6.1 second 1/4 mile.

I have always been tempted to go, but feared I would be overwelmed by the "spit n polish" crowd - I bet more than half the cars/show goers would be what I consider he "stereotypical" Vette enthusiast - something I have been trying real hard over 6 years to distance myself from hehe ;)

and what in your eyes is a "stereotypical Vette enthusiast":-)?

BTW Car and Driver in their new issue considers the 964, M3, NSX, MX5, E55 AMG, Supra Turbo, GTI and the Corvette ZO6 to be the "Best Cars for $25,000 New or Used"

The GTI and MX5 were new the others were used. I havent seen any Supra Turbos for under $25,000, so it must be really used.

Wasn't that bad actually RC. Alot of places trying to sell you stuff. I just went for the day as its only 2 hrs from my house. Good drive up through Amish country.

Scale of show.. this is maybe 1/10 of the 82 acre field that was covered every inch by a car or parts supplier:

Another field, not in the first pic, in fact behind the camera

And another not in either 2 pics, over a hill from the last pic.. I gave up at this point with at least 10 more fields I could shoot.

I believe there were over 5000 Corvettes present.

The 500 mile a year spit n polish with 200lbs in chrome and other doodads who think their 1993 Coupe is worth $40,000 because it may be the only car with green paint and mauve leather with the widget delete and original tyres crowd ;) hehe

This is true - it is this group of core fanatical enthusiasts that have kept the Corvette alive as the most produced, longest running single sports car model ever built/sold/produced on the planet.

These are the people, that together with huge shows like Carlisle keep the flame alive and keep the enthusiasm and sales high enough that GM is incented to keep building the Vette.

56 years is a long time to keep building a niche car... no one else has managed to do it is such large numbers - ever.

LS7 soltice... Mallet is a true gear with with a great passion for making fast cars!

My friend works with him and always mentioned how crazy he was behind the wheel.. drifting his 700hp+ CTS-V going at over 100mph..

A good second niche car is the porsche 911

Similar concept, but there is just not the same numbers and after market. Remember, even a new Corvette is within reach of an ordinary wage earning person - you can not really say that about even the cheapest new 911 - which I guess makes it the second niche car after all ;)

By european standards the 911 may have a "huge" following, but all one have to do is go to any large Corvette show/meet to realise this is fanaticism on a different scale, in a different league - almost scary.

There are literally a million Vette owners out there - and we all take great pride in greeting/meeting and sharing our hobby ;) (except the gold chain crowd... although I must say, while that is another stereotype I have never actually seen one except on TV)

The turbocharged Mallet Solstice has blown my mind. I'll return later to digest the rest of this crazy meet.
