Nope Xerox invented the GUI, Apple paid for a "demo" of the Xerox GUI OS and then stole the idea and came out with the Mac a few years later.
They did not "pay for a 'demo'" as you say, but they hired people who worked for Xerox. Then they looked at what they had developed and built on it. They expanded the system and made it usable, as well as popular. They made the idea practical....they made it work
