yeah i figured it was done like that on purpose... but wasn't there a scene where Willard wanted to make the call but the wire was cut?
and i had the impression that they only needed the airstrike if Willard had failed to kill Kurtz. so i guess that the whole situation would fall apart if the key person was simply eliminated.
