5th Gear - S15 EP8 - 23rd February, 2009 - Discussion
Adventurer and motorbike enthusiast Charley Boorman sets Vicki a tough challenge this week when he asks her to prove that he can have just as much fun on four wheels as he does on two. Inspired by this task, Vicki presents Charley with some souped-up cars that are powered by motorbike engines. What will Charley make of these hyperactive vehicles?
Honda’s new Insight has Jonny going green with envy this week. He wants to find out whether this hybrid car is as eco-friendly as its manufacturers claim, so he puts the Insight through its paces against a standard diesel vehicle. How much will their fuel-consumption levels differ?
In a classic ‘Fifth Gear’ shootout, the Vauxhall Astra GTE 16v and the Ford Escort RS Turbo have Tiff’s heart pumping as he takes the two 80s hatchbacks for a spin. In their heyday, the cars were close competitors in the market. How will they match up against each other two decades later?
Elsewhere, Jason reviews a fresh version of the hot hatch – the new Ford Focus RS – in its first ever television test-drive. He ditches the ‘Fifth Gear’ track in favour of a sun-drenched Spanish highway in order to reach his verdict.
In the hopes of making some easy money in these difficult times, Jason visits Europe’s biggest usedautoparts sale to sell off his wares. Having previously purchased a jalopy which he then sold for a profit as scrap metal, Jason tries his luck hawking another old banger.
Tim also has advice for cash-strapped drivers this week as he gives his rundown of the finest speedcamera alerting systems on the market. His thorough testing will show motorists the best way to avoid being snapped by a speed camera and slapped with a crippling fine.
To conclude the series in style, Tiff heads to Abu Dhabi to get up close and personal with the city’s motorsport culture. As he takes his seat at the Aero GP – a grand prix race for aerobatics planes – Tiff braces himself for the nail-biting sight of jets flying in close formation just a few feet from the ground. At the conclusion of the competition, Tiff has the chance to get behind the controls of one of these extreme flying machines. How will this motoring
enthusiast fare when he takes to the skies?
