That 1.5sec lap advantage was what he had in the second stint only. Remember on the outlap you cant immediately belt out a superfast lap - you need to get your tires up to speed.
after reading the article it kinda proves my point, Schumacher was just going slow cause he could, and when he needed to go fast, during his pit stop lap he went as fast as he needed. His pace was faster, if he didn't had done that he would have came out second...
Yes ... I think the truth is that perhaps he had a tire issue but he drove at a slightly slower pace what was truly capable to con Renault.
