Cruise controll with a mind of its own!
This is scary! A Renault Vel Satis went bananas, and gave full throttle without the drivers consent.

That has to be very scary if you were sitting behind the wheel, just sitting helpless, unable to stop the car. I think the guy handle that situation very well. Although one can cut of the ignition even if the car is equipped with a card instead of a normal key. The car I drive also has a card instead of a key. But it still is possible to cut the ignition in an emergency situation even if the card isn’t recognized.

I saw this history yesterday on television, it's absolutely incredible. One thing is sure, that guy was very lucky.

maybe its a good thing Renaults aren't sold here anymore. I find it hard to belive though that they wouldn't have some kind of fail safe back up for the cruise control system. Does anyone know if Renault uses electronic throttle bodies yet?

Yep, most of the gasoline cars in their current model line up use electronic throttle bodies.

very odd that they wouldn't have a failsafe program then. then again i might have been spoiled by higher end technology

Ya I'm just gonna use this as an excuse when I feel like speeding... call the cops saying "I'm stuck doing 150 on the highway! Help!" then when you get through their roadblock thing... just slow down and say, "It came off all the sudden, I don't know what happened" And you don't get in trouble. O man,,, I'm doin it

These are things that can happen, doesn't matter what car you drive. We are more and more relying on electronics to "help" us, but they are allways made by man, and man makes mistakes...
|
I think after this you guys can expect to hear of a recall by Renault

The 2.2dci 115bhp idd only does 120mph.
|
If the guy's car was a 2.2 dci the problem can't be caused by a malfunction of the electronic throttle control.

you're right. obviously the cruise control unit didnt see/register the stop light switch actuation so it didn't know it was supposed to shut off. something else had to have happened in the acceleration circuit of the CC to make it stick like that. all it would take is a bad ground or bad contacts somewhere in the circuit. Bad programming maybe too. Hard to say. I don't know anything about Renaults so this is just semi-educated guessing.

dammit, why didn't that click before?
 why the fuck didn't he put it in neutral?
if the engine got fucked up from it Renault would have paid for it anyways since it was the result of a warranty defect.
thanks for turning on the light bulb SFDMALEX!
