ok, as some of you know, i just moved into a new apartment.

My roomate has a Desktop computer that i instaled a D-link wireless card in, so that we could get the wireless router going so i can use my laptop.

he is running Windows Millenium Edition and i'm having issues geting his wireless card to connect to the network. My computer did it automatically (i'm running XP and have a built in wireless card on my laptop) but for some reason i can't get his card to locae or recognize the network.

I've followed the instructions in the book provided as best i could, but the majority of it them are XP based and don't mention a damn thing about ME except for a couple of vague screen captures.

Can any of the netoworking guru's here give me hand in figureing out what i'm doing wrong?

You know the chances of xp and me interfacing smoothly are slim to none..

Put wireless into the equation and ME just fails...

The best advice is to have him install xp, but if that's not an option, you should check the drivers

Unplug the device, and uninstall it from the device manager. Then plug it back in and check that you're installing the correct drivers...

i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, and that didn't work.

i'm thinking about just giving him my XP disk and saying install that shit since XP finds all the hardware and shit automatically.

i just hope his comp has all the requirements for xp

the requirement are pretty much the same as for ME, just more disk space. If his processor is a little slow, all the eye candy and graphics stuff in xp can be disabled.

he has a dell dimension L667r..ha says its a coupl years old. don't really know what was availible back then

Actually - all this effort will be wasted if the wireless cards and router are not going to talk

I have had great success (until I upgraded) having WinME, WIn98, XP, NT and Win2K all on the same network talkig wirelssly and wired.

The secret is that not all "compatible" adaptors like to work with all wireless routers.

It's a transmitter/receiver thing. Just because a pile of 802.11B or G hardware says they are compatible doesn't make it so. I ended up sloving the issues by simply sticking to a single brand

as soon as i got XP loaded and hit the hardware wizard, it started talking. So everything is now up and running

XP just feels 10x easier to work with than ME.

Well done - let's hope he wasn't running WindowsME for some special software

hehe I only ran WinME until I could upgrade my video software.

Now don't forget to use a WEP key to keep nosey neghbours form sharing your wireless connection..
