Not for the first time, BMW scored a major success at the International Engine of the Year Award. The five-litre V10 engine already available in the M5 (see launch report) and due in the M6 Coupé was the overall winner, and also scooped the awards for Best New Engine, Best Engine Over Four Litres and Best Performance Engine.
"Winning overall honours in the Engine of the Year awards is a huge achievement and one which rewards our engineers' capabilities and enthusiasm," said BMW spokesman Bernhard Gobmeier. "By making a product that has variable peak power outputs and low down torque combined with high revving characteristics, the M5 driver has at their disposal one of the most powerful yet flexible production engines in the world."
Two other BMW engines also scored class awards - the three-litre twin turbo diesel found in the 535d (which was second overall) and the M3's 3.2-litre petrol unit.

technically the vw 2.0 FSI turbo is an AUDI engine aswell since that technology debuted on the R8
But still top marks to BMW, as it should be

Aren't there a handfull of cars that can do better? The Prius is rated at something like 37MPG.

Despite the increasing competition, BMW continues to shine. From a total of 72 Engine Oscars awarded to date, BMW has won 20, the largest number of any of the world’s manufacturers, a clear endorsement of the company’s Ultimate Driving Machine positioning.

I was waiting for one of the Audi attack team members to say that Thamar!
It's fairly likely somebody will try to discredit this comp though.
Regardless, it's a pretty good haul by BMW. :fadein:

Exactly what I thought. A little too biased towards BMW to be taken seriously. And yes I know they make great engines but still..

Haha, you got to be kidding me. So lame and of course it comes from a MB fan
The International Engine of the Year Awards have become one of the most sought-after automotive accolades and an effective marketing tool for triumphant marques.
Judged by a panel of renowned motoring journalists from 26 countries as disparate as the USA, Japan, China, Russia, New Zealand, India, Korea, Germany, France, South Africa, and the UK, the Awards highlight and acknowledge underhood engineering excellence.
Judges apply their impressions from driving today's latest cars to help them find the powerplants that offer the best driveability, performance, economy, and refinement, and reward manufacturers for the successful application of advanced engine technology.
The Awards are organised by UKIP Media & Events - Automotive Magazines Division, Britain’s largest group of technical car publications that include Engine Technology International, Testing Technology International, Tire Technology International, Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology International, Vehicle Dynamics International and European Automotive Components News. Hit our home page (www.ukintpress.com) to discover more.
Which auto manufacturers make the best engines in the world? The International Engine of the Year Awards provides the answers.

Take it easy I'm not trying to steal your wind. My point is that I think the "engine of..." take away some credibility from themselves by letting almost only BM engines win. Once again I don't mean that the engines aren't great.

man, BMW engines rule all apparently. I figured that honda might get more awards than they did. I am impressed that the same basic engine (the V10 from the M5/M6) won 3 awards. And that the M3 engine is still good enough to win an award! M3's RULE!!!

just so you know, last year 65 AMG got the award, "best performance engine" .
If they think the BMWw engines are the best of course they going to tell it, dont lie or they will lose credibility.
There is also another competition "Ward’s 10 Best Engines" where BMW also are doing very well. So its not only this competition.
Wards 10 best engines:
2004:
Audi AG 4.2L DOHC V-8 (S4)
BMW AG 3.2L DOHC I-6 (M3)
DaimlerChrysler AG 5.7L Hemi Magnum OHV V-8 (Dodge Ram)
DaimlerChrysler AG 5.9L Cummins 600 OHV I-6 turbodiesel (Dodge Ram Heavy Duty)
Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. Subaru 2.5L DOHC turbocharged H-4 (Subaru WRX STi)
General Motors Corp. Vortec 4.2L DOHC I-6 (GMC Envoy)
Honda Motor Co. Ltd. 3L SOHC V-6 (Accord Coupe)
Mazda Motor Corp. 1.3L Renesis rotary (RX-8)
Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. 3.5L DOHC V-6 (Infiniti G35)
Toyota Motor Corp. 1.5L DOHC I-4 Hybrid (Prius)
2002:
BMW AG
3L DOHC I-6
BMW AG
3.2L DOHC I-6
DaimlerChrysler AG
Mercedes 5L SOHC V-8
Ford Motor Co.
5.4L/5.4L supercharged SOHC V-8
General Motors Corp.
4.2L DOHC I-6
General Motors Corp.
6.6L Duramax OHV V-8
Honda Motor Co. Ltd.
2L DOHC I-4
Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.
3.5L DOHC V-6
Porsche AG
2.7L DOHC H-6
Volkswagen AG
1.8L turbocharged DOHC I-4
and its going all the way back to 1995. So this is not really a surprise that BMW are doing well again.
