This is a long shot but it could be msn 6.1, i downloaded it a couple of weeks ago and nothing would work at all, it would open for about 30 seconds the shutdown, so i switched back to 6.0 and everything was fine again.

try to change them to no notification, close & re-start Messenger and then change them back to notification and then close & re-start Messenger.
if that doesn't work and your sure there are no viruses you should,
delete your .NET passport from windows and then restart and then re-create it. You will find that in the control panel under USERS.

its very strange as it wont work on three different computers that were all working fine on Sunday...some have 6.0 others 6.1...at the moment I can only see that it is an ISP issue...(maybe they blocked one of the ports or something)

Looks like I am not the only one suffering from this problem according to the Microsoft Forums....I still want to know why it is effecting some poeple and not others though.
OK, so I think the problem has to do with the MSN Alerts
system, because if you click on the Alerts tab, you'll
get a message saying that "...The MSN Alerts service is
experiencing difficulties. Try back later." Still no clue
how to fix it, and Microsoft's online support basically
blows monkey chunks.
