Le Mans Question

So in the Movie Le Mans, Steve McQueen gives the backward peace sign.

Now the question is what does that mean? I have heard that it is basically the British equivalent to being "flipped off" or that it is just a taunt. So which one is it? Is it as severed as severe as being the bird?

Or what else could it be?

But in the movie, it looks like that he was kinda saying like "Good race, see you next year" or something like that. . . and it seem like the guy acknowledged that.
