Yeah, its actually incredibly easy to make a jet engine from a turbocharger. Just whack a combustion chamber between the compressor and the turbine, pass high pressure high mass flow rate air through the comressor entrance, feed fuel to the combustion chamber, spark her up, and away you go!
A gas turbine engine is an Axial version of an automotive centrifugal turbocharger with the combustion chamber in the middle, and usually a series of compressor and turbine stages.
