Honda today unveiled the 2007 Civic Type R, a high-performance version of the Civic hatchback for the European and Asian markets. Referred to by Honda as a "superhatch," the new Type R continues to be powered by the naturally-aspirated, high-revving 2.0-litre DOHC i-VTEC engine but the unit has been significantly reworked to improve responsiveness using a new balancer shaft and drive-by-wire throttle control. VTEC variable valve timing and VTC variable inlet camshaft technology continue to underpin the engine structure. Further development of the Type R unit means more useable torque, as the switch to high-lift, long duration valve timing (the cam change) now takes place at a lower 5,200rpm, and continues all the way to 8,000rpm. Max output is now 201 horsepower at 8,000 rpm, compared to 200 horsepower at 7,400 rpm. Acceleration to 62 mph takes 6.6 seconds — identical to the previous car.

Well we all knew it would be offically announced, and finally it is. Great news for me as I love the TypeR range, and although that interior is weird as hell, its also awesome as hell. Thanks for this post

Too bad this hatch isn't coming to NA, I actually quite like the styling. I would still prefer the traditional twist the key to start "feature".

The styling is bold, and it looks pretty good. Not fond of the interior, though.

I like the red digital outputs, but I'm still not a huge fan of the look. Its probably too radical for a conservative person like me lol. But I am interested in how well it performs relative to other hatches.

I like the way it looks but isn't 201HP a little low? I thought previous Type-R's has 220? Is this car a lot lighter? Anyone know the curb weight? What is the difference in the Civic-Si? Doesn’t it also have 200HP or 199 or something basically the same?

I guess I was thinking about the Integra Type-R with 210. So if the Civic SI has 197HP, the Type R only has 201, a diff of 4 HP? That’s not even enough to count. And both cars have a stock LSD so what is the difference? The Type-R better be at least 200lbs lighter, the Si is already too heavy coming in over the 2,800 lbs mark…

Yeah but that does not seem like a big enough of a deal to warrant the Type-R badge. If it is also not lighter all that will amount to like a half a car length improvement over the Si on a road track. That’s basically all they did with the newer S2k over the older one. Tweak the revs so it gives you a little more power sooner and of course they lowered the redline in it. All of which did not make much of a difference on a track.

I’m all for Honda working on making more power down lower. I had an RSX and know all about having to rev to 6,000 to get much of anything which makes driving around town fell like you are in a golf cart. Vtec is getting old.

If you want a light car, go get urself a Elise. 2800lb is light by today's standard. The Si also has a very tall 6th gear for highway cruising while the Type R has a closer range gearbox.

The damper, bush and spring characteristics are all unique to Type R. Extra strengthening has been introduced into the floor cross member just ahead of the central fuel tank, around the upper front suspension mountings, while the lower cross member just ahead of engine bay provides greater rigidity.

The deletion of items such as the audio system, rear load cover, engine under cover and reduced noise insulation material brings weight down by 40 kg.

I believe the GT3 and the GT3 RS has the same HP rating. If you don't think the Type R has enough upgrades to justify, you can always buy the Si. I really don't see any problem for Honda selling those.

Btw, I don't know which RSX you have, but either way, the iVtec motor is one of the better 4 bangers out there. How much torque are u expecting out of a 2.0 engine anyways?

VW cars always have things rattling ....... and most dealer sux @ fixing those. But somehow, lots of teens love it.
