ok so today i did a little burnout in my car. its not a big powerfull car... it a mazda protege with 122 hp. i got 1st gear while the tires were spinning for about 12 seconds, and i shifted to second and my car died *probably lack of power cause the rpm's went down and it got grip* so i turned on my car and drove home. my tires still stank as i walked home but when i passed by the bonnet, i smelled cluth *cluth stank and tire smoke are way different.* so i opened my hood and it stank like cluth!!! i automatically got scared

should i be worried. when i did the burnout i didnt hold the cluth in or anything

That doesn't matter if you held the clutch or not. When you dropped the clutch to do the burnout, thats when it started, as you progressed through the burnout the clutch was engaged and thats why your tires were spinning, but it was also slipping. The stock clutch for that car is not designed to be dumped at high RPMs like that. What you smell is burning clutch and is caused by the clutch slipping. You might get away with it once or twice, but when it slips like that, it's also wearing down EXTREMELY fast. If you do that a few more times I hope you have some money put away to replace it.

By the way, 12 seconds is no little burnout!! I'm surprised you were able to get away with it in that car without anything serious happening!

Yes that was not very clever if that's your daily drive I fear..

The other day I had an Audi A3 in front of me, we were going uphill.. he was obviously having problems since he was unable to use 1st and 2nd gear.. so instead of parking and calling somebody, he tried 3 times to take off in third.. the hill was very steep.. he did it but I never saw so much smoke coming from a clutch in my life... that was even less clever...

How many miles / km has your clutch BTW?

probably you wore out your clutch plate dude. I hope not, cause it really is a hassle to get it fixed. happened to me once...and dear god, cost me a pretty penny.

Lesson here is,Don't do stupid things in a Small Hp FWD car because they aren't designed to do Line locker burnouts..I learn't that lesson.Another thing is,when doing burnouts in FWD the CV joints don't like it either.

U'll b awrite mate, proably just blued ur friction plate. this had happened in me mates old saxo (90 bhp fwd) that thing got burn outs and wheelspins dun all the time, and in the end he replaced the clutch for a better one. Then he foud out that one of the driveshafts was fucked and the seals on teh gearbox were goin. This was lowered 60mm as well, wiv 16's on it.
I try not to wheel spin to much, and i rarely hold the handbrake on and do continuous ones, but my clutch is fine. Its the CV joints im worried about!!
Just dont go doin burnouts all the time, i doubt u'll b able to do them much at all now, clutch probably bites less than it did b4.
But it dont mean that uve fucked it totally and u need to go replaceing components.

LoOL. I get that smell every time I engage the clutch at high rpm for stand still lunches in the EVO.. .. But I got a Heavy Duty twin plate OS clutch.. so I'm a bit OK.. .. I know the clutch won't last long.. but I'm having fun .. and the Evo is not my daily drive..

u just have to be willing to rapair things u break like others have said

if u drive like an ass your tires are going to weat out sooner then normal..if u stop short all the time ur breaks arent going to last half as long as advertised..same goes with the clutch

cars are like that..u can only have as much fun as ur willing to pay for =)

i came across a problem when i had my 5speed brought in for some tranny work. in the process they broke the line to my clutche, and it leaked air in, so i had essentially no clutch after 10 minutes of driving. i hope nobody else has had to learn how to start up in gear, and shift at the exact right rpm... tho i got good, and it helped my normal gear shifts sync in quicker... im sure it did more harm to the powertrain. never once burned~smelled my clutch tho... lotsa fwd burnies, but never did a big smokeshow w/hand brake engaged.
