I think this is true. As far as I know McLaren never built engines ever. McLaren F1 had a BMW V12. Their Formula 1 cars never used built-in-house engines. And the SLR which is a Mercedes, is powered by Mercedes!

The Zonda uses the old 6.0L 48 valves V12 that was on the last generation S,CL,SL. Current generation none AMG S,SL,CL classes along with Maybach have a 36 valves 5.5L V12. AMG 65 cars have a 36 valves 6.0L V12, which was modified for the ME 4-12.
