Ok I have thought about posting this and I kind of have mixed feelings but im gonna post it anyway.

I am starting up a new web site that is designed around internet storage. The concept is for what I consiter a nomonal fee users get a fair amount of storage to store files.

What type of files am I talking about? Well photos seem to be very popular around here dont they? PHotos would be one thing that could be stored. Other things would be videos and just about anything else.

The limits would be few but would be stricly enforced as to keep me from ultimatly getting in trouble with the law.

What could not be stored on the accounts would be copyrighted materials such as mp3's from major recording lables and adult images.

Now if such a service was offered how much in american dollars would you be willing to pay for a high speed server with lets say 1GB of disk space and maybe 10GB of bandwidth?

Your feedback is greatly appricated.

OUCH.

I dont see how they can be doing that plan unless they 'oversold' the server. (ie sold more plans than they had disk space).

If I was to offer that plan I would not come close to recovering the costs of the server unless it was oversold and I dont feel thats very good business.

try finding servers that are placed at Sealand. apparently online casinos, porn, copyright material are placed there. no government in the world can stop it. Or other places that are out of the OECD group. there are quite a few hosting companies out in vanuatu. vanuatu ain't gonna stop them as well because thats the countries main revenue along with tourism

New company are to be let alone IMO! I signed up with iexpresshost.com.. very good dead and all.. but a NIGHTMARE!! The site was down for a whole month and after around 50 mail nobody ever replied to me...

I'm now opening an account with a Swiss host, 1 GB, 40 GB transfer for a pretty good 120 USD/year..

I'm the average around the net for 1 GB space is 10 USD, for a good service like hostrocket.com... but you always get more than 10 GB of bandwidth.. so you have to find a way to give away your GB for something around 4 or 5 / month.. not more..

No mysql? What a joke. What the fuck is the point of php if you don't have access to a database.

LOL I saw also an host with a very very low price, good space, good bandwidth.. it was strange.. then noticed almost everything was optional LOL, CGI, SQL and so on

it was all written on the bottom of the page, pretty small

From a business perspective I'd say that they count on the fact that not everybody uses all their space all the time. That seems a pretty reasonable thought to me. I suggest you do the same, fishfreek.

Also, I get 50MB of storage from my ISP and I'm not planning on paying for more. I or AlienDB7 upload the videos for other peoples enjoyment. So if anyone should pay for it, it's those other people.

For now, only if I was to set up an internet business would I consider buying storage space.

no mysql cuz its the bronze package...they ahve silver and gold too..i think both have mysql and many other features....

True.. it seems risky.. and as I always say, I don't love "unlimited packages"... but it's true only a very small % of webmasters actually uses lot of space or bandwidth..

Again from my new host infos: over 12'000 customers, only 3, yes, three, actually exceed the 40 GB transfer allowed and have to buy additional GB... so basically they could also give unlimited bandwidth.. but IMO it's still risky..
