It is actualy quite simple, when the chicks are hatching and come out, the first living thing they see and smell is their "mum"
So for instance if it were you standing in front of them when they are hatching, they would follow you around, because they think you are their mommy, gooses and ducks also do this...

Yeah, it's called imprinting. But judging by the amount of ducklings (or goslings) that dog must have been hanging around by the maternity ward
