Makinen testdrove the escort for the 1000 lakes rallye in 1994 because he was contracted just for this rallye and he won it; (It not easy at all to win a 1000 lakes rallye, and its even more difficult to win it in a new car, and if its not enough, ford had been without winning a rallye for one year and a half since the last victory was in the Portugal rallye in 1993); as a result, his image went forward so much that he was desired for almost every team, finally he got contracted by Mitsubishi, and of course, he made the right decision

However, this is not the only anthological race in the 1000 lakes; as far as I know, he did fourth or fifth one year before in a private lancia delta integrale

Although he has had very remarkable races before he was contracted by mitsubishi, such as the british championship in the nissan sunny F2, his speed on the works Mazda 323 GTR, his races in the private Lancia Delta Integrale, and so on; IMO his performances in the 1993 and 1994 1000 Lakes were the most influential to be contracted by mitsubishi

Finally, a curious thing about Makinen and the Nissan Sunny F2 in 1993 as far as I know; Tommi Makinen and Salvador Servia (a catalan guy who was a former spanish rallying twice, and Oriol Servias father as well (Oriol competes the Indycar)) were invited by Nissan motorsport UK and Nissan motorsport Spain respectively, in order to compete the Catalonian rallye with a couple of Nissan Sunnys

The curious thing is that Salvador Servia was retired from rallying about 5 or 6 years (he was a profesional driver on rallying on deserts, though) and he even outplaced clearly Mr Makinen although it was the first time ever that Salvador drove a F2 car, before the Nissan, his last race in a front wheel drive car was about 1979 or so in a ford fiesta
