Can you still buy laptops with Windows XP?
I've been shopping around for Dell & HP/Compaq laptops but cannot find one selling Windows XP. I prefer XP due to the minimum sys requirements and the fact it's on SP2 already. This is for my friend on a budget.

The sub-$600 laptops of Dell & HP are finely spec'd to run WinXP. If it ran Vista it would be shit.

Yes. XP is no where close to being completely phased out.

sub-$600 price tag? The cheaper the better as my buddy just needs a simple laptop.

Right now you can get a 14.1 Acer with Celeron, 512mb($20 and you'll have 1gb) for $399 after rebate.
I believe it comes with Vista home though...

mine came pre-installed with vista home premium (AMD dual core 1.7 Gz, 1 Gb of RAM). it crashed twice with the later ending in the "black screen of death." So lame. I booted with an old copy of XP and the laptop is FLYING.

Actually it depends on which version of Vista you got, I think Business and Ultimate versions get a free "downgrade". You just have to call in.
Apparently it is actually part of the licensing terms for Vista.
