See the spot on the top, one third from the left? That's dirt on the CCD (Charged Coupled Device), not the lens. The CCD is the sensor located behind the lens in the camera body. It "records" the image seen through the lens instead of film.
Normally,y ou can see the dirt on the CCD at small apertures (high numbers) like f18, f22, etc. To see how dirty your CCD is, set the aperature as high numerically as possible and take a picture of the sky (cloudless portion). Examine the photograph on your computer at high magnification.
Cleaning the CCD requires special tools and cleaners. Check out this page (I know it's Nikon related, but the techniques are similar for all DSLRs). Be very careful when removing your lens. It is very easy for dust to get on the CCD. I carry plastic trash bags with me and change lenses inside the bags (one use only).
