You're right, it is due to the flat plane crank. If anyone can recall the Lotus Esprit V8; it suffered the same plight, only it sounded even worse .

Go to 2:55 of this vid for confirmation:

vs.:

I actually saw one with this same colour scheme today .

...and then, there is this sound:

I believe Ruf did this so their V8 would not sound like an American V8 bit rather like an angry flat-6... I really hope they are able to pull it off

Not having grown up around european 4 cylinders, you dont know what they sound like - because if you did, you would instantly recognize the crappy sound of a 4 cyl fiat or lancia or alfa or VW even... and the F-Car V8's are really firing like twin 4 cylinders the way the crank is laid out

YOU seem to think that V8's should sound like Ferrari V8's - that doens't mean they dont sound like 4's

You don't have to grow up around crappy 4cyls to know how they sound like, there are crappy 4 cyls everywhere specially nowadays and I know they sound horrible, but I cant agree with you, because there is a big difference.

There is no difference between a crappy "tuned" fiat 4cyl and a crappy sounding anemic F-Car V8 - they sound the same.

Really they do, just ask people who have heard both

Which version of Ferrari's V8 do you think sounds better:

with conventional 90° throw crank

or

with 180° 'flat plane' crank

Below is a sample of the last of the great sounding Ferraris (F50 with tubi exhaust - F355 isn't bad either ):

Whoops , the video descriptions should be the other way aorund, of course (i.e. the 360 uses the flat plane crank...).

speaking of V8s that sound like 4 cylinder engines, have u guys heard the X6/X5 M cars?...

apparently they don't use flat cranks like ferraris...at first i thought it had to do with placing the turbos and exhaust manifolds between the cylinder banks, but then i listened to the xdrive50i (which has the same layout) and it sounds just like a normal V8 (muscle car sounding) , but why the 4 cylinder sound for the M cars?

What is the exhaust/muffler layout? They could have a cross pipe that is sized/position to have a cancelling effect on the opposite exhaust pulse.

Yes, I agree that the Maser/Alfa 90° crank versions of the Ferrari V8 sound way better as well. Although tubi equipped 180° Ferrari V8s would do 'in a pinch' .
