I have a few 720p and 1080i movies and both look alittle better then DVD.. is it worth the major price hike ??

^ Are you saying that Blu-Ray is better than HD DVD when you have a screen that is +40"?
But to answer question Pokiou, it depends on the encoding codec a numerous other features. But both are capable formats and technology wise there isn't a significant difference.
Now between High Definition (720p and 1080i/p) and DVD (480p) there is a signification difference. I mean even with Enhanced Definition TV which is 480p you could see a good quality increase already over SDTV.
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-...v-and-hdtv.htm
These are the minimal resolution:
1080i/p = 1980x1080
720p = 1280x720
576p = 852x576
As you can see, the High Definitions offers a lot more pixels, thus more resolution = better looking pictures.
Here's is another good guide that explains everything pretty well:
http://www.cnet.com.au/tvs/0,239035250,339271051,00.htm
Also when viewing at the optimal distance (8-10ft away) for televisions larger than 40" but smaller than say 60", it is hard to notice the difference between 1080p vs 720p. Not that there isn't a difference, but at optimal viewing distance when you are that far away, it will not make a significant difference.
But if you are using it for a computer monitor as well, by all means get the one with more pixels.

Blu-ray has outsold HD DVD this year 2-to-1. We aren't going to sugar coat these numbers even though some might call it fanboy-ism but others will quietly state from the corner of the room, "Numbers don't lie." Home Media Research reports that Blu-ray has currently sold 1.6 million discs this year while HD DVD has only moved 795,000. The research firm also estimates 3.7 million high definition disc have been sold since launch and 2.2 went to the Blu-ray camp with the remaining 1.5 belonging to HD DVD. Only time will tell if these initial numbers mean anything but it seems Blu-ray is winning the battle for '07.

Looks like this format war will last a bit longer now:

Affiliations in the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray format war have been pretty clearly defined for nearly two years now -- despite a hybrid player here and some international releases there, most of the players involved have not switched support since the early days. Well that's all about to change, as Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks Animation -- which started off HD DVD only before deciding to go both ways -- have officially announced plans to release movies exclusively on HD DVD, dropping Blu-ray support entirely. This means that hits like Transformers, Shrek the Third and Blades of Glory won't follow Mission: Impossible III as cross-format releases when they debut this holiday season. Paramount has released about 30 movies on Blu-ray so far, but those days have come to an end: apparently cheaper HD players trump a 2:1 sales advantage. We can't wait to see how the Blu-ray camp responds to this.

^ Ehh, you could still use it for gaming, which is the number one reason why I got it. Although I did pick up one BluRay movie the other day which was Casino Royale.

^ Yeah, haven't decided what movies I want yet. But I think I am gonna go for:
Pearl Harbor
Corpse Bride
Underworld Evolution
The Italian Job
Kiss of the Dragon or The Transporter
Nothing too special. The Guardian was good, but I think Pearl Harbor had better action. I already have Blazing Saddles. And I already have two copies of The Italian Job but I didn't like Babel. Can't decided between car action in The Transporter or terrible story but awesome fight scenes in Kiss of the Dragon.
