The Boxster saved Porsche in 1998 from going bankrupt. That is why Porsche used the same front ends on the Boxster and 996's at the time, to cut costs in production lines and R&D. After the Boxster got Porsche out of trouble they were able to get back on track coming up with new designs or mechanics for things like second gen 996 and 996 Turbo.
It's also why we have the RS Spyder racing program right now. Because Porsche has been keeping itself on top of the game.
