Unfortunately I spend so much money on actually racing that I dont have the cash for the hardware for a sim racer.. Good to hear they are improving though. Find one that includes road atlanta and I may have to spend some money.

I think GT4 is a fairly realistc experience. Nothing incredible, but a fun simulation none the less. My main attraction to the game is the vast amount of cars / tracks it contains. No where else can you take the car of your choice on the track of your choice.
I don't know if I would buy a PS2 just for GT4, but it would be close. Go find someone else who has it and give it a couple good runs with a nice wheel. You'll figure out your attraction to it pretty quickly.

All depends how far you want to take it and what experiance you look for.
If you want a hardcore simulation. Something that will take a good year to get fast at, and I am not exajurating, something that takes time and patience, mechanical knowledge then go the PC route.
If you want a fast fun with no strings attached then go the PS2 route
With PC simming your looking at $1000 worth of driving hardware. Thats wheel, pedals, shifter.
And a high end gaming system that you will have to keep upgrading

Sadly, "real racing" is not even an option at the moment, or the near future so I have to stick with the best alternative

Well - hooked up and installed GTL.
Having grown up with a Cortina and Mini as our early family cars - I was really excited (if some what dissapointed that you have to start with nothing) to get the game cranked up.
Great graphics - great(ish) controls - great ambiance - but fucking aweful sound.
I do not remember the old Mini or the Cortina sounding like a badly squawking off-tone PC speaker.
Every now and again you can hear a decent digital audio sample come through - but mst of the time you have an aweful rapid-fire small sample shreiking and trying not to sound like a 10 year old copy if Indy Car Racing.
Very sad the sound sucks so bad.
The detail cockpits are awesome, detail car liveries and track detail is top notch.
The GT6800 handles the medium to high detail pretty well.
But it's a case of look - don't listen

It's some Real AC'97 embedded piece of crap...
How ever, averyon ther game provides very nice sound.
It just seems as though their 4 cylinder sounds are little squeaky.
BTW - you have a saved game with all the tracks and cars unlocked? I can't be bothered to work my way up the ranks...

Odd, didnt hear anyone complain about the sound before.
Here is a profile, but you will need a money trainer to buy all the cars, but everything is unlocked...except two challeges I think...
