There's a fair bit more money to be made in car manufacturing than all this green business, so I actually think it's difficult to move beyond that. The coal mining sector is also very powerful, possible more so than the greenies. Unions and businesses in general are probably favoured more as interest groups because that's votes and cash all in one. Of course, unions are probably more powerful (and wealthier) in Australia than in the US, and the green lobby here is pretty rubbish, so the situation in the US may be slightly different. But, if anything, I'd say money wins everytime. As devious as the green forces are, I can't see them winning. Influential yes, but not universally powerful.
