ABS gives you the ability to steer your car while slamming on the brake
it gives you a safe and controlled braking without locking up the wheels

If you want to try out the no abs fina a large snowy parking lot and pull the abs fuse. I am sure however that you will stop much faster with it on.

Agree with this one.. But I mean in my 2nd post..
When u hit the brake enough without activatin the ABS (without liitle massage)
u can stop better..
I tried it 3 days ago while I was returnin from a friend at around 3am.. When I was comin to the speed bumb I hit the brake totally but I couldnt stop..
I tried it with hittin it gentle at the same place I stoped before passin the bumper..

It was my sisters car.. Mine has no ABS tech.. 
Maybe it occurs because of the aim.. It was not 2 much but there was a little..
Cause much more force effects on the tyres..

You know - this is excatly what a bunch of us were told by a BMW of South Africa engineer when our high school visited a facility.
Except he used loose gravel as the example.
He said Non-ABS car will stop in a shorter distance on loose gravel than an ABS car - as the loose gravel will build a wall in front of the locked tyre.
He then went on to say that while ABS on gravel/wet pavement etc would not stop quicker - you could retain directional control - something a locked and sliding wheel couldn't do.
Perhaps that another myth that needs to be dispelled - that ABS cars stop quicker.
ABS equipped cars just save amatuer weekend warriers from locking up their 14 inch diameter 8 piston calipered cars by tapping the brakes is all...

During Toronto's big snow storm, I was a passenger in an accident where a hill was so slippery, the ABS actually made the car speed up. There's no situation at all where ABS makes you stop faster -- not on ice, not on water, not even on dry pavement.
It's only there to help you steer while braking, because if you lock the wheels, you'll slide. ABS doesn't help stopping distance at all. If you absolutely need to stop, and there's nowhere to steer, push the brake pedal as hard as you can, and pull the handbrake. Or put the transmission in park, or if it's manual, downshift as far as you can without grenading the engine. But if there's nowhere to steer, ABS won't help you.

this may have been sufficiantly answered already but im going to give i ta go anyway
not true, there isnt enough intertia of a digging barriar in the snow to stop you any faster; while this is entirely true of gravel, and dirt it isnt of snow.
it is true that a non abs equiped car will stop faster on dirt then abs equipped, given its the same car with the same brakes, tires etc. just with out thy computer.
several of the auto manufactureres are having a dificult time getting stopping distances to gov. standards on dirt since a large majority of vehicles are now abs equipped.

on dry tarmac that is even, such as a racetrack, it may stop you quicker, but it varries from vehicle to vehicle. when the viper gts acr finally had abs installed, stopping distances on dry, even surfaces droped by a quite segnificant margine. one problem with locked tires on dry, other then the sliding aspect is loss of traction at the surface point the tires is locked on. on water, ice, snow, mud, grass, it is better for abs in all applications. the only way to get better stopping is with bigger brakes, and better gripping tires. note bigger brakes alone wont help you stop better.
most cars ive driven, although not all of them apply brake pressure to the rears as well as the front with just the foot brake. putting an auto box in park whilst moving does nothing for saving stopping distance, it just may brake the pin that locks the tranny. it isnt a big bin,w hich is why they still recomend you put the e brake on when you are on an incline.

Loose gravel is an entirely different situation(and not something your car will generally be on). ABS allows the car to be kept at optimal braking force. A human cannot do this as well as abs. An expert can come close (in the dry, not the wet). But seeing as how none of us are named M schumacher a PROPERLY setup abs system will be superior. This does not mean that some cars don't have sucky systems that were setup with sub par parts....Regardless even the worst systems of abs stop better in the wet.
However... there is a cost. Namely abs is another added weight. Thus, it tends to be a toss up on the race track depending on your ability, the length of the track, the size of the car, ect.

Arent the issue of braking distances and ABS here closely related to the usage of tyres as well?
How important are the tyres in this case (snow, gravbel, etc)?

LOOOOL, thats the greatest shit i ever heard, sorry m8, absolute bullshit, "use the handbrake"
ABS always is better, there are only a few situations, like if you use snow chains....
thats it, no discussion about it. you just have to push the pedal hard enough, ppl with no experience dont even know how that works and only the front whells will lock....

Wide is right. Sorry, interceptor_01 your the one that is bullshitting... The maximum friction between two surfaces occur just before they starts sliding. That's a physical fact. So if you manage to brake as hard as possible without locking the wheels, you would stop a bit faster than when locking the wheels. This applies to all cars, disregarding ABS. Of course it's really hard to do, so if you ain't very experienced the ABS is recommended.

Are you sure about that graywolf? If that's true then ABS is very close to the optimal brake performance. When ABS was introduced I think they alternated between completely locked wheels no brakes at all. The ideal brake assisting system would use the technique Wide and I has described. If that's what a modern ABS does between the locking it's great, but the car industry is scared by the thought of having a computer controlling such vital functions of the car...

The ABS system only works as it should when you hit the brakes hard.....but it doesn't stop 2 tons of steel from sliding on hard packed snow or ice......that's physics.....but as someone said with those computer generated pulses to the brakes you get to maintain directional control as that 2 tons goes into its slide......and that's what you rarely have without ABS in a panic stop.

My Subaru Legecy uses the stock ventilated discs in front and solid discs in the rear with four sensor ABS. I read someone say that some cars have good ABS and others have bad ABS. Does my car have good or bad ABS?
