this is an X plane ...... X means Experimental , Y means prototype ....its name is X 43 .. its got abt 2 varients X 43A and X 43B ..
it was flown before ...... at about mach 10. something ... it blew up ....
and yah ... it wasnt flown in space ....

well they're flown at well over 100,000ft of altitude. if gets iffy up there as to whether your still in our atmosphere or in space.

And in the early 90s(93 maybe?) it was decommisioned for the last time. All of the existing sr-71 aircraft are accounted for and on display in air museums or outside of airbases across the country. the few that still fly belong to Nasa, are research aircraft, and are stationed at the dryden flight research center, adjacent to edwards AFB. unless you know of some top secret wing of blackbirds, theyve all had their wings clipped.

I find it ridiculous too. this is one of the most successful planes we;ve ever built. i think it was money very well spent. it can do anything you dream of when it comes to reconnisance, yet it was deamed too costly and then shipped off to museums around the country. but we still use the u2. the fucking u2! its made of aluminum foil, flies at 60k ft going like 5 knots, and uses a frigging camcorder! come on, the united states of america can get a little more efficient than that.

but for any of you other black budget conspiracy theorists out there, rumours for years have said we;'re workign on the blackbirds successor, codenamed 'aurora.' capable of mach 8+ and 200,000ft+. this could be it, as a matter of fact. it uses hyperjet technology.
