We live in Switzerland, snow is quite common and yes I'm pretty sure he will try to get hold of an AWD car
And Merc, as Audis, are simply not his stuff

How about the new Subaru Legacy?

More cars to consider:
Audi 1.8T quattro
Acura TSX
Acura TL
Infiniti G35X

Yes indeed, the new Legacy could be nice! Audis already striked, the TL is still in the works but will cost some 4000 USD to import it.. IMO he will stick with the XG30 another year

Well my dad had a X-type 2.5 and when equiped with snow tires it was very good in the snow. I was actually very surprised. Not as good as our A6 avant but what is. I live in central NY so we see plenty of snow in the winter time and it did rather well for the year that we had it.

Why doesn't he get a Volvo S60 AWD or something ?

Reliably, looks good, I think it suits his taste...
