It doesn't matter that it's the best sporty SUV in the world (I would take Landies and FX45) It's not a Porsche. And yes I've seen a Cayenne in real life...almost always a middle age woman driving cayenne to Food market, not some cool rally person who wants to go off roading

and yes...the styling inside and out was a letdown...especially compared with the Landie Range Rover which has been proclaimed as the Bentley of the SUVs

it was hard to see Cayenne in the malaysian road....i've only seen two of them until now....the first time i saw it is in the Kuala Lumpur International Motorshow (KLIMS).....that was a huge porsche i guess....they claimed the cayenne to be the fastest SUV on earth.......i like cayenne...and i don't know what do you guys think about this car....

One of the most popular comments that I have read about the Cayanne is that as well as it handles on the road...it handles even better off of the road. Many people have knocked the simplistic styling of it, but personally I love the simple nature of the car. Only the badge truely hints at the cars true potential. Although the one downfall that I think the Cayanne has is.............the price.

I have seen the Jeremy Clarkson test drive. But I thought that he was a bit brash about the styling. Once again I completely admire the shaping and simplicity of the car.

Good for Porsche, as they would say in Marketing, it is a cash cow. Splitted the development cost with VW but yet still able to charge a premium over the Toureg. Even though it looks like crap it will (is) selling like HOT CAKES. Which in turn means that more money for Porsche and more money invested into development of new cars/next generation cars (i.e. 997/998).

But still damn that thing is ugly. Almost as bad as the new BMWs.

The Cayenne is a travesty of 911-ish styling cues and SUV proportions. The head designer behind the Cayenne said that they should be given credit for giving 'a jeep the chracteristics and looks of a Porsche'. Given credit? Credit for THIS?

You would expect Porsche to have done something to break the mould, create a whole new niche, or approach the idea of an SUV with more innovation in mind. What they have done is bsaically taken a BMW X5, and tried to outsmart it in terms of performance, handling, badge kudos, etc.

Sure, they have done that. The Cayenne goes like stink, handles great (esp with air susupension), and ppl KNOW it is a porsche. The Cayenne Turbo trounces the X5 4.6iS, but the Cayenne S on standard steel springs loses out to it.

The real tragedy here, more than anything about the idea of a POrsche SUV, is that they had a fantastic, absolutely GOLDEN opportunity to re-invent the SUV genre and set a benchmark that no other manufacturer could touch. BUt they got lazy, did a deal with VW to share development costs, and just made something louder and bigger (figuratively?) than the X5. One upmanship, penis envy, whatever.

This is even more damning than the Cayenne's looks. The company that built the 911 and 986, the GTI and the CGT, got LAZY.

Remember BMWfreak, I don't think that it is as simple as getting Lazy. Like I said, it is more about finding a vehicle that they could sell to make lots and lots of money without much expenses/investment. Developing a car like you said would've taken years and cost in the hundred of millions (not including the infrastructure).

Economically it just wouldn't be feasible. It would've been great for drivers though. But this is definitely better for Porsche, especially in the long run.

reluctantly, i agree with you. I was thinking about Maserati and the Kubang concept as well, which to me seemed like a take on the SUV genre with a difference. As it is, I just wish the looks could've been done with more care in mind. If anything, maybe the rest of the car is not a result of laziness, but the looks are. I have seen them up close, sat in them, had a short test drive. THe interior is Pure Porsche, but the outside? Heartbreaking even though It goes really well.

Lets just hope Cayenne MkII will correct the wrongs of this one.

the bmw is ready for the new X5 4.8i with the xDRIVE transmission....i would buy tha car any time from the cayenne because it is simply more beautifull...oh and by the way don't forget that these cars weigth more than 2tones...so i don't think tha these cars could be sportscars as jc said.
