Good to see the new cup car coming with a sequential, this season unfortunately my mate munched 2 clutches miss shifting from 5th to 2nd! ops:
Im guessing that the wing dimension increases are still within most GT series regulations, or are porsche still supplying the current wings for next years car?
Its been a while since ive had a read of this thread, i dont know if you'd be interested to know St-anger, but this season ive been following my friend to most of his races in the british GT championship, where he raced the Tech 9 motorsport (official distributor for Techart parts in the UK) prepped 996 GT3 RS. After seeing a lot of GT3 RSR action up close, those things are unbelievably quick! And with the tiny restricors they run, i find it hard to understand how they still make so much power! and boy do they rev!!

yeah - i think we´re all looking forward to see u more often here, posting stuff or whatever...
...at least i would
well, my last project ( 955 power kit ) is more or less done, the new one will start on oct. 4th - unfortunately i´ll be completely off at PES/PEG subsidiaries around the world, at first they told me i´d have to go to Michigan but lately, after some interventions from my side, i was told that i can stay in europe...
sorry can´t provide u with the details, but i´ll be off for approx. 2 months completely, only at home at weekends, then for another 4 to 6 months - don´t know how much "off work time" i´ll have in that period...

well, we´ll see...

Nice to see you can continue working for Porsche. Don't worry about the JW share of your "off work time". Needless to say the wife goes first. PC will certainly be here and it's highly unlikely it'll be not bear your name anymore. It won't be the same though, with you not around.

They're keeping you busy then! Well always better than having nothing to do, and it is working in some of the best workplaces in the world!!
Can i find any details on the 955 power kit you speak of? I'd be interested to read of what was involved in the project.

...u can find something in "News" - again, no details, there´re some options left for marketing, from the engineering point of view we´re done , it should be good for "at least" 500hp, code named E81, if it´ll be retrofitted or just as an option isn´t decided yet, also final HP figure, but all this should be announced till end of sept./oct., price 12-15k €...

so, as i mentioned last weekend, this week the Cayenne Powerkit is presented at media site, here´s the text:

Stuttgart, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is expanding its Cayenne customization program to include increased horsepower for the Cayenne Turbo, an automatically extending rearview camera on all three Cayenne models, and new Panorama roof system that is approximately four times larger than the standard Cayenne tilt-and-slide sunroof.

Beginning in December 2004, Porsche will offer increased horsepower for the Cayenne Turbo through its Tequipment program. The upgrade includes increasing the engine performance from 450 to 500 horsepower, a reinforced brake system and an adapted suspension system requiring 19-inch or larger wheels. Thus equipped, the Cayenne Turbo can reach a top test-track speed of 167 mph (series production: 165 mph), and a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.9 seconds (Cayenne Turbo with 450 horsepower: 5.2 seconds). Fuel consumption, as with the 450 horsepower Cayenne Turbo, remains unchanged at 13 mpg city/18 mpg highway.

Porsche achieved the 50 extra horsepower by optimizing the flow design of the intercooler and other engine management developments. In conjunction with changed accelerator pedal characteristics, this results in an optimized torque build-up and even sportier engine characteristics. The maximum torque has increased from 460 to 515 pounds-feet, and maximum torque is available between 2,250 and 4,750 rpm.

The front brake system has a new aluminum six-piston monobloc disc-brake caliper with a brake pad area that is more than 12 percent larger than the standard Cayenne Turbo front brake system. The brake disc is 14.96 inches/380 mm in diameter and 1.5 inches/38 mm thick (series production: 13.78 inches/350 mm in diameter and 1.34 inches/34 mm thick). Porsche engineers also optimized the brake ventilation. The rear brakes discs have also been enlarged to 14.1-inches/358 mm (series production: 13 inches/330 mm).

In Germany, the Cayenne Turbo with kit engine costs EUR 116.844 including VAT (series production: EUR 101,880) and in the USA USD 109.200 excluding taxes (series production: USD 89,300). With a retrofit offered through the Tequipment programme, the price including VAT is EUR 14.268 (USA excluding taxes: USD 18.500), plus the assembly costs at the Porsche dealer.

From December 2004, all Cayenne, Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbos are available with an optional electrically operated Panorama roof system made from laminated safety glass. It has a surface area of just over 15 square feet/1.4 square meters and is approximately four times larger than typical sliding sunroof/pop-up sunroof systems.

The panorama roof system features three movable segments and one fixed segment. The front segment swings up when opened and acts as a wind deflector, which minimizes wind noise and turbulence at high speeds. The two central glass segments can be opened separately to allow a targeted flow of fresh air for the front and/or rear areas. The two segments can be pushed above or below one another, and to maximize the opening both segments can be moved all the way to the rear. In addition, it is possible to set the roof system in a raised position over the rear seats. In total, 15 different roof configurations can be selected.

In addition, an electric roller blind helps protect the interior from excessive sunlight. The entire roof system is operated by way if an illuminated rotary switch located in the roof console. The system is available for a U.S. price of $3,900.

All Cayenne models also will be offered worldwide beginning in December 2004 with a rearview camera system.

The camera, which is mounted just below the rear window and features a wide-angle lens, extends automatically when the reverse gear is selected. Once activated, it provides the driver with a clear image of the area behind the car via the 6.5-inch full-color display on the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system. This system not only provides precise reverse parking and the ability to see obstacles behind the car, it also lets the driver couple a trailer without the driving having to rely on a second person providing directions. A cover plate moves to protect the rearview camera once a forward gear is selected or at speeds above 9 mph/15 km/h. The U.S. price will be $1,680.

to say it like it is...we´re dissapointed with the final compromise
as u know, i´ve been working on this project for months in a leading position and marketing decided ( again ) to take the "non engineers" way...
personally i´ve to admit, i wouldn´t buy the E81 kit as it is presented now, and i´m sure PAG won´t benefit from that step - customers´ll be quite dissapointed as well IMO....
well, i´m afraid we have to wait and see...

I don't really understand : a jump from 450 to 500 bhp and from 460 to 515 lb of torque is not what you tested ? You mean that you tested even more powerfull engines ? What was the reliability then ? And the numbers ?
WHat i remember is that you described it as astounding or something like that but i don't remember seing numbers ( sorry if i don't search in the 52 pages )

Thank you anyway for these informations

well, as an employee i can´t and won´t blame PAG in an official forum, IMO marketing made "some" big mistakes but that´s just my opinion...

PM...

St-anger if you feel comfortable providing additional information, I would be really interested to hear how the marketing department affects decisions at Porsche. It wasn’t really clear from the press release or your comments how marketing took the “non-engineering” way out. I would have thought that the marketing department would have wanted as much hp as possible for the cost of the upgrade and the engineering team would have wanted lower hp with more reliability assuming these are conflicting goals. Given the high cost of the upgrade I would have thought that the marketing department would have been able to get more hp.

With out providing specific details or criticism, if that is possible , could you elaborate on the extent that the marketing department affects the product and how much power they wield at Porsche? Has the marketing department been given more power recently? As an outsider looking in Porsche has always appeared to be run by the engineers. In the past, most if not all of the design changes appear to be made with little to no regard to marketing appeal. However, the current CEO seems to have a more marketing focus. The fact that the Cayenne even exists is an example of that IMO.

I agree with your assessment for almost $20,000 USD there really isn’t much of a performance increase. Besides it isn’t like we are talking about a 911 where the owner’s main desire is more performance. Not that a Cayenne owner doesn’t care about performance it is just that there are other factors that go into the decision to own a Cayenne like passenger capacity, towing capacity ect. In the end I don’t think that anyone interested in a Cayenne is going to think that the money is worth the added performance. Now a 911 owner, who knows some of them are willing to spend anything for just a little performance increase .
