the SMG control unit has 2 modes: Automated and Sequential

each mode has diffferent shift programs, since the clutch and shifting is computer controlled. 5 different programs in Automated and 6 modes in Sequential.

each mode is a harder shift than the last.

1-5 are the same in both modes, with the exception of changing gears with the paddles/lever.

program 6 in Sequential reguires the de-activation of the DSC system (push button ) and is essentially Launch/Burnout mode

all Ms will have this. The E46 M3 already has it as an option, M5 it will be standard and the M6 will as well.

SMG is also an option on all current BMWs, but only has 2 modes and no other shift programs.

I am disappointed of this mode, because the E39 M5 and Caddy CTS-V have also 400hp and do much better.

Fortunately, the E60 M5 have a total of 507 bhp.

in 400bhp mode everything softens up though, including gear changes
