Default Eyes Wide Shut -- a deeper meaning?

Just watched this for the first time last week over spring break, and holy shit it was boring and could have easily been edited down to a 10 minute short film....

The idea of my girlfriend and I watching was to try to find the deeper meaning behind it. She'd taken a film analysis class a few semesters ago, and since both of us are bright we thought we could find a meaning. We do understand the significance of the "secretive mask orgy" (as i'll call it), being a recreation of some old deviant Catholic ceremonies, but beyond that the movie just seemed pointless.

anyone here know if Kubrick was really trying to get a point across? If so, what?

1up there sir

Actually , for me anyway Kubric's films have always been a bit of a warning...

When you watch A Clockwork (Significant meaning already as in 24-7) Orange (red=anger (Hatred) - white uniforms (peace) + red = Orange) "Ultra-violence" when Alex and his Team of thugs rape, beat down, and indulge in oddity (The Milk Bar) its a jab at society taking the individual to the extremes just to stand out from the crowd ... then at the end of the movie where Alex is hooked up to that machine in order to watch scenes of happy things etc - it's a metaphor for Life/ society's ability to tame even the wickedest spirits. But by the end of the movie the viewer is left feeling sad for Alex - he's lost himself as the individual.

In the same vain I think is Eyes wide shut - It's an insight into the secret world of "Secret Societies" - Tom Cruise gets caught up in the World and must battle his way back out. (Again Society is depicted like a weird trap - a hole ready to suck you in) this film is merely on another gradiose level that most ppl will never see - which makes me feel that Kubrick himself has some dealings with these types of ppl ... I wouldn't be surprised if he had.

Those are my thoughts
