Porschephiles... was the 928 ever raced officially?
As the title asks, was the 928 ever campaigned officialy as a Porsche supported race car? Like the various Club, Club Sport and Cup versions of the 911 and 944/968?
I know there were a couple of 928 version, 928S, 928GT etc - but they never seemed that hard-core.

I definately know the 924, and later the 944 were both raced; both with limited successes; and out of that was born the 956...
the 928 had some racing potential; and even a 928 based motor nearly made it into the 962C as a twin turbo/single mild turbo application persued by the Kremer team; but there wasn't the budget appropriations for such development at Weissach at the time to further the case for a new engine/car.
that engine never even saw a track in that form; and only 911's, 914's, and 924/944's were campaigned by PAG.
hopefully somebody can add something to my knowledge there; but i have not an ounce of literature about a 928 racing program in either privateer, or factory backed teams.

I have seen privateer 928's running in the SpeedVision GT series (GT and GT2 classI think) - but then again you see almost any privateer entrants in that series.
I also found a bit about a privateer 928 in le mans in 1983.

i see the Joest New Man car!
the following year, they reworked Bosh Motronic in the car and ran 2 laps further on the same fuel load at Le Mans... 84... that was Bell's attempt at a 3-peat Le Mans victory... but was 26 seconds off 1rst, and at the time set a lap record with nearly no brakes!

Pretty much what I was gonna say, I know that the 928 has been entered in numerous different series by private teams, but to my knowledge, it was never raced by Porsche themselves. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the private teams recieved support from Porsche.

Porsche did build a 928 to set a speed record in its class. That car later became Mark Kibort's SWC car.
