Default Son, you can fight or surf, an' Charlie don't surf!

Son, you can fight or surf, an' Charlie don't surf! (Apocalypse Now)

When did you first use the internet? This excludes college/school/company intranet e-mail or messaging...

I reckon we will see some interesting responses from people who work in the IT industry on this one, but other than that I would be surprised to see anyone using the internet before 1995...

When I was a fresher at Uni in 1994 I found myself in a shared house of strangers, one of who was an Amiga superuser on a Media Lab Arts course (Dave Garrity, where are you now?) Anyway, this housemate showed me how to reach BBS on his Amiga.

Other than that, it was July 1997 for me, when I got my first job a week after leaving Uni... I used the 'net in business capacity and a month later (after finding Yahoo, Car sites and 'other resources' ) I bought a P133 with a superfast 56k modem.

i believe it was around early to mid 1998 when my parents first got it. we had just bought a brand new dell computer 300mhz P2 processor and 128 mb of ram, 8.4 gig hard drive lol, it was a monster at the time i was in 8th grade at the time if i remember correctly. definitly was slow as hell i can remember waiting 2-3 hours to download a 20+ MB file lol.

Well for actually "use" rather than quickly check email etc at home rather than school i'd say 2003 when i went to uni! Cos our internet was so slow at home and somebody always wanted to use the phone before I went to uni i probably spent a hour a week online! **EDIT** But for sure i used it a bit at school before to research stuff, and look at pron but to be honest I didn't really get what the internet was about back then or did I

About 1992 for me. My late-friend was a PC tech and at the time had a 'super fast' computer at the time; can't remember the specs on it, and a 28k modem-Yeeehaww! Used to go over to his house and check out the 'net. Not like what it is now.

I first got the net in 1998 or 1999 and it was on a Pentium2 350mhz. I was the guy who introduced yahoo messenger to everyone since I thought it was amazing My first online game was delta force. I rember saying to everyone who passed behind me that the enemies was real people. Them was the days.

mm, don't make me think too much or I'll overheat

I believe that my first computer was bought in 1999, my last year in highschool. I had already "surfed" the net in the... 66Mhz pc's from the computer labs, but didn't like that it was all about chating. My first email was something huuuuge, something like this:
ledesmaantonio-panther- and something more with the school's name on it

by those times I'd already seen that the net was more than text.

back with the story... my first internet connection was during 1999, and I filled up the gigantic 1.2 GB HD with a speed of 28kpbs (that was fast!)
