Default server maintenence?

i've been wondering jsut what kind of maintaining a server needs. I mean, they are pretty self sufficient right? and it's not like they have oil or anything needs changing.

what kind of maintence does one need that requires it to be taken off line?

Well, i've noticed JW has never really been down for any kind of maintenence, except when the server upgrade was done a few months back. However smaller forums, such as my paintball forum, go down for maintence. These forums don't have anywhere near the traffic JW does, so why do we never go down? Is our staff just that good? 8)

maintenence is really software based.. although cleaning the inside of the tower is usually a good idea..

fans can go bad, power supplies, etc..

but really its about keeping the box secure, and up to date. (patches, service packs)
