VW MK1 / CITI
Anyone remember the VW Golf MK1? In South Africa it is still being produced, but as a Citi Golf! I drive one of those, a 1.4i. My problem is the car wont keep it's speed at 135 - 140 km/h. I know a 1.4 liter engine isn't suppose to, but it irritates the hell out of me!
Since the speed limit in South Africa is 120km/h, everybody steals 20 kp/h, and i cant keep up with traffic. Is there any way i can improve my engine, without it affecting my fuel consumption (fuel prices in S.A. is extremely high) ?

it still seems odd to me that it can't keep 140 kmh with a 1.4 liter engine....in what conditions it doesn't keep the speed up? are you at full throttle at 140kmh? or it just doesn't accelerate fast?

Acceleration is pretty good for a 1.4i engine, 0-62mph in 10.8 seconds, but at full throttle in 5th, it wont keep it's speed at 140kmph! I have to slip down to 4th, and sometimes even thats not enough, it still lose speed!

I have a Golf Mk2
1.3 l engine with 50 bhp
On the Autobahn my max speed is 150km/h when its flat.
Downhill i can go a bit faster, but uphill the maximum is 120 in 4th gear.

Cams, and balancing the engine and swaping to a MKII 16V Gearbox is going to improve your max speed and acceleration.

I got a Golf Mk2 1.6l engine and a top speed of 170 flat out
It's still my first car and i just love those Mk2, but i wouldn't tune the engine yet because that means fuel consumption would go skyhigh. I'm still a student so i can't afford tuning my car. But even when i do i'm sure i'll pay tons of cash for fuel.
Maybe you should keep this in mind, you might not have a fast car but it's like passive safety. It's a bit slower so you are a bit safer. My guess is, if my first car was a Golf 3 or 4 i wouldn't be typing here right now (if you know what i mean)
