Whats your opinion about careers in advertising

Ok IM about to get into the study of advertising and i was just curious if anybody has any follow up on this direction. I seem very interested in that but have doubts on to goin to school for this, ill be attending the illinois institute of art to get my degree in that area. Just am curious if its a great paying job as well as fun??? and other info about it

well, brother of adamrotor, my grandfather ran a successful advertising firm, until he sold it ( i think it fell under a year later, due to change of ownership, but he wanted to retire) and he loved it. i dont know much about the field, but its always going to require great creativity, and if you have it (going to an art school, it seems you do) then why not? im sure, once you get your foot in, it will open up much more then... say.... a starving artist

Well, in the UK, breaking into advertising is increadibly difficult. Not impossble, but hard work. There are quite a few years of little pay, and working your arse off. Quite a lot is down to your contacts. Start networking, get some work experience in the field. Be pro active, if you want this, you will have to make yourself stand out from the crowd; how you do this is important, after all you are 'advertising' yourself to people who know how it should be done.

I know I am just talking about the UK, but I imagine it would be similar where you are. The course will be the easy bit, getting a job and holding it down is another story.

I think in most every country, advertising is like acting - you need that "big break account" that puts you on the map - and then a lot of business flows from you being the "ad agency for Product/Company X or Y.

And many times, that big break is through the above mentioned patience of networking and trying to get your creative talent in front of the right person at the right time.

First off nothing is impossible, Improbable is another issue, i myself went to school for graphic art advertising design and marketing, now i own a debt management company and run another, In advertising design many smaller entry level jobs are not available due to the farming out of work to south american countries with lower rates for design with the same quality of work. The other problem was described above you need that big break account , My suggestion to you is if you are truly interested in the field and you have a thick skin for criticism then go for it , Start working as a type set artist and try to get a job with a magazine or even the phone book, once you have some experience under your belt , get a name and open yourself as a business, Freelance build up your money and equipment, Constantly shop your services to companys both big and small and never ever ever take less than what you are worth. If you sold yourself properly they will pay the price.
