I tend to agree with the 'get the license plate and back off' approach, but of course if someone is weaving in and out of traffic at 100mph and causing a danger to other road users then it is time to throw the stinger strip across his path (the spikes that blow your tires). The stinger is FAR more effective than a policeman risking his life (and in turn putting innocents at risk) trying to shunt the car off the road, and thus causing damage to property, the police car etc, which our tax dollars have to foot the bill for.

One thing I think is wrong is when a cop dies in a chase, and they try and hang it on the perpetrator. This happened recently in Texas during a chase where the cop was FOLLOWING the car being chased, and while I feel sorry for the policeman and his family I can't believe you can hold the perp responsible for the actions of a car that was behind him! You're not going to tell me that a policeman should not be responsible enough to drive within his own ability and keep control of his vehicle, if the policeman 'pushes' the car too hard and loses control then that's his own stupid fault.

edit: In the UK we have 'pursuit' cars which are highperformance and have trained drivers, IIRC, only these types of police car are allowed to chase. Over here, AFAIK, it's 'open season' for any police car to chase you. That's right, a lumbering old Crown Victoria trying to keep up. Laughable. My Saab would outrun one of those, it's no wonder people give it a try!!!

My point exactly.......in Norway the police got some good cars, but the police suck at driving them, and the good cars are not in my neck of the woods either......

so if you are heading home in the middle of the night, driving like you feel it should be done and suddenly pass a cop car on a sideroad....this might be a ford mondeo, a vw caravelle or simular......and it goes after you with the blue buckets flashing.....you can either just keep going as you have been doing and out run them or you can break, stop and wait for them to give you a ticket.......

I know what I would do.....
A VW Caravelle? You're fucking joking, right?

I nearly fell off my chair with laughter when I read that!!!!!

You want to take the risk of letting a killer go? Beside: no sane prson runs from police - and if he dores, he should be responsible for all consequences - he's the one that caused the chase ...
Do not misunderstand me: I'm all for use of chopper, roadblocks and stinger as much as possible, but sometimes you have to chase, regardless of all ... And in that case any and all methods should be used (purposefully killing the driver included) to make the chase as short and not dangerous to general public as possible.

So who do you feel should decide its right to chase the driver down and kill him if they feel he is a hazard to public?

what happened to your day in court and to get a fair trail....at least when you are facing death penalty ruled maybe by one cop having a bad day....Im sure you understand it cant be that way......
Now this is just awkward and scary - Now I amd agreeing with brembo...

Now while i don't agree in this particular case, i also believe that when you run from the police or commit a crime you forfit all of your basic rights, if you endanger others by waving a gun about you'd most likely be shot, so in theory you could apply this to cars also, but deliberately killing the driver would be damn dangerous IMO both to the police and bystanders.

I believe it might be that ordinary cars must get permission to chase, and must give up when a trained persuit driver turns up, at least i seem to remember seeing something like that on one of those police chase docus on TV
