Default how do i make my pc boot from IDE and not from SATA hdd

this morning i tired to start my computer up, it will go through the win xp loading screen. normally it will switch to the login screen, but this time the screen goes black. last night everything was running fine. i tried boot in safe mode, still nothing. it freezes after trying to load 'giveio.sys'. now i am clueless as to what to do next. i doubt i will get much help without someone taking a physical look at it, but i'm just hoping someone knows.

now to the topic. as the subject says, how do i boot from IDE instead of my SATA hard disk? i've tried my BIOS settings but no matter what, it always chooses the SATA hd. I want to get my stuff off just incase its causing the problem described above. and then completely format my drive etc.

This doesn't sound like a problem with your drive, just with your windows installation. Just repair the installation with the xp cd..that should work

Well looks like your sata takes up the primary master slot. So its probaly hdd-0, just select hdd-1(the IDE driver) as your first boot device after the CD-ROM or Floppy or whatever takes up the top spot in the boot up priorities.

i've tried reinstalling windows but the setup stops when examining my sata hdd. but no problems installing onto a ide hdd.

i've also done what you've suggested SFD, but always chooses the sata.

if your IDE HDD is not a master .... then it will give these kind of problems ....

disconnecct you sata and try to boot from the IDE HDD .... if it dosnt work .. then the windows in the IDD HDD just might be corrupted .. .

Maybe your controller requires additional drivers...windows asks if you want to include them in the beginning of the installation. You have to press one of the F keys, i forget which, and then put in a floppy with the drivers

Sounds like the ide isnt set to master. On the back of the drive there should be 3 sets of jumpers with one marked auto, one marked master, one marked slave. Move the ide to master.

pharzo, i've installed sata drivers beforehand

graywolf, its set to master on the ide.

i think i'll just buy another one and then copy the stuff over the network. an 80gb isn't expensive anyways
