Default Transmission question, urgent

Have any of you ever seen an automatic that stays in 2nd-5th gear for everything except WOT? The manual shift gate will not take the car down to first unless it is at almost WOT and I think there may be a problem with the car.

I'd say it's perfectly normal. The car is being smart, it's getting you better gas mileage.

Sounds almost normal, but at low speeds, it should (?) kickdown into first if you ask it to...

i'd probably agree with that, but.....
i had a similar problem with an auto car awhile ago. it wouldn't take it down into first........then after awhile second was gone, by the time i took it in to be checked the transmission cooler had blown, which in turn killed the cooling system sending tranny fluid into my coolant tank thus spewing it out into my engine bay when the engine was on for longer than a short drive. i'd have it checked now to be safe.
