SMG, DSG, TRIPTRONIC...

i have some questions about this kind of gearboxes. Can you do a burnout with those gearboxes? does the clutcht survive more than a day in a city? Can somebody tell me his experience with those gearboxes?

well; a SMG has a clutch to engage 1rst/reverse; but no clutch for the remaining gears, as the computers involved rev-match, and engage 'perfectly' also, the gears are all spinning in such a system

a DSG is much more like a hybrid of a SMG+automatic+manuel... it has 2 clutches in its system... as you are shifting one, it is already engaged in the next gear you want, and has both manuel modes, and fully automatic modes... people who drive it say its flawless... unbievable

a tiptronic is an automatic that will hold gears if you tell it to... making it nearly as good as a proper manuel gearbox... it too can be, and mostly is fully automatic.

BMW's SMG system is an automated Manual gearbox. It works the same way as a regular manual trans except that the SMG control unit triggers a hydraulic system to disengage the clutch, shift and re-engage the clutch.

While the M3 SMG and M3 standard share the same 6spd box, the M5's 7spd SMG has a dedicated pattern that would confuse the living hell out of you if it was in a manual box.

BMW has found that the SMG will extend clutch life by at least 30% iirc.

Well both SMG and DSG boxes (not all) have "Launch Control" which raises the revs then dumps the clutch usually letting out a nice cloud of smoke.

This is only with the M cars equipped with the Drivelogic systems. (BMW obviously)

what do you mean by Autostick, Tiptronic? Depending on the car it might not let you sit there and do a burnout you might be able to roast them just by slamming on the gas but that isn't the same. Our cars at work will not let you brake Torque them because it is Throttle by Wire so it will cut the revs at 2500 and shift the tranny into 2nd gear but with Traction control off you can put it into manual mode and slam the gas and it will roast the tires for a good distance popping the rev limiter.

ie powerbraking? dunno. There's a burnout mode built into it though
