I dont think having a policy against stopping shoplifters is that bad. Could keep someone from doing something stupid over some groceries and getting shot. By firing someone that breaks the policy you set an example for others and maybe save a life. Im sure the last thing a store wants is a bunch of vigilante employees getting hurt or whatever for some Spam. Self defense is a different story. Whether or not he was an employee and the other person was a customer at the time is up to the courts now.
